I suddenly realise the other evening after I had sat down yo sketch and not knowing what subject to choice , that I automatically start to sketch or paint old vehicles. It s something I have always liked to do , but had not realised in all theses years that it was actually a response not knowing what I wanted to do.
It’s almost like being on autopilot , no pun intended, it’s a subject I love to do and feel comfortable with . I spend a lot of time as a child around old cars being repaired and helped out as well , my father was a excellent mechanic and could get most things to run again. This had me thinking is the differs or even odd , do others have a comfort/ default subject or subjects.
It’s not just cars it’s old trucks and tractors, steam engines etc , hope I’m not loosing the plot , mind you I think that happen a long time ago .
Come on it’s time to have a look at yourself and lady me know I’m not a loony as I think I am.
Some examples of my work , please do include yours .
Please be kind in your responses, just in case I do need medical help.

I'm glad you cleared that up for us Colin. I think I've got it.
Your fall back sounds pretty wide ranging Sylvia. Love your painting.
I've got a fall back subject Dixie, I suspect we all have. Yours being old cars and ships explains why you're so good at drawing them. I like them too, but seldom draw them. For me, it's faces and human interaction. Ideally and usually from imagination...when I'm stuck I don't want to work at it too much. Like this old pic I posted some years back...

Like those flowers Sylvia and the lovely bright colours. I got a bit lost there Colin, but have managed to decode it , well I think
I have . I always love seeing your sketches of people Lew you capture the very sole of them and they are always beautifully drawn. I have decided to follow your example and to dedicated a sketch book to old vehicles , I have had three new hard back sketch pads bought for me in the last month or so. I wasn’t sure what to do with them and didn’t want to waste them on rough doodling, I have enough others for that . All three are roughly A3 in size , the one I will use has a very smooth paper and I think it could carry a little colour, I will wait and find out if it does . I do think we all have our default subjects and comfort zone often without realising it. The important thing is to keep doing what you do and enjoy it, when it becomes a chore I will just pack it up, climb into my box and shut the lid.
