I am presently crafting an article, assisted by some of our magazine contributors, highlighting ideas and art materials that contribute to a more environmentally friendly approach. I believe it would be beneficial to provide a space for you to share your own insights and suggestions.
What magazine are you referring to Cuthbert?
Once "environmentally friendly" turns into "let's make oil-painting playground safe" - which I hope is not your intention - it poses more problems than it can ever solve.  Pollution and toxicity caused by artists' materials is a drop in the ocean compared with that produced by heavy industry, car manufacture, agriculture, and more. The promotion of "cadmium-free" paints by Winsor and Newton is a case in point: when even the EU is satisfied that cadmium in artists' paint is not a hazard, promoting paint "free" of it is at best a marketing gimmick.  Given the present extreme difficulty of obtaining lead-based whites in oil, we are on a slippery slope of extreme caution, if such a thing is not a contradiction in terms - of course I don't want to encourage, or use, hazardous substances; but sometimes there is no realistic alternative unless one's to stop painting in oil, particularly, altogether; risk can generally be managed - removing all trace of it leaves us with nothing worth having.
I totally agree with Robert regarding oil paints and ‘cadmium’s’ in particular! I’ve just recently finished a forthcoming article for ‘The Artist’ magazine, showcasing the Hahnemuhle Eco friendly range of drawing papers, but nothing is net zero of course. The Artist magazine being the premier art publication on the market in the UK. So… tell us about this magazine of yours please… why you didn’t mention the name in your intro could indicate that we’ve probably never heard of it! And what contribution from this forum are you looking for?
I thought it might be an online article the OP was referring to.  But can't find anything easily via Google.   I suppose we could consider the environmental aspects of sourcing and treating the raw pigment/s. However, as most manufacturers would probably agree, a little goes a long way.
