Stubbs doesn't appear in the BBC Great British Painting Challenge started last night. Haven't decided yet who my favourite is to win, early days but the usual overkill with two useless presenters, just let people paint without all the interruptions....as my wife commented, here you go again!
Agree, hopeless presenters. Where do they find these artists from I wonder, surely these can't be the best ones who applied!!!!!!!
Poor Una - doubtless a lovely person, but annoying to the nth degree. I haven't watched the programme this time - yet. I'm almost bound to weaken, but I really don't want to. It's got nothing to do with painting, really - it's just a game show, and the BBC's pathetic nod to its arts coverage commitment. Shallow as a saucer of tea.
I'm going to remember to watch this next Sunday. Thanks for the reminder.
The Rev Richard Cole, who was terrible on Strictly. but i listen to him on Radio 4 on Saturday morning. I won't be watching the rest s I will be off on my travels again. I won't miss it as it only makes me angry. I was angry last Sunday when the old guy was told to stop painting in watercolour, and paint in acrylic. Then the tutor complained that he was using it like watercolour.
I would have been in my element in the distillery....painting of course
I think it's tough on the artists, as has been said, often their earlier work is of much greater interest. Last year I swotted up on the two mentors, and found nothing that was of interest to me there...one wonders how they get these jobs. I do like the work of the two judges...I've forgotten the name of the older woman...some of Lachlan's work is interesting. (All subjective, of course). It seems less about painting and more like some kind of art assault course. I'll watch the next episode to see how things go. I gave up on it last year.
A point that made me give a Gallic sort of shrug; the contestants are repeatedly told to paint what they see, hey, it worked okay for Van Gogh and co, yet the judges and presenters seem to want just the opposite, ie how they see things in a totally photographic light, and two of them disagreeing in front of viewers? Also, the thing about the public judging who should stay/go? What's that all about? Isn't it a painting competition judged by "experts" on talent and merit? I shouldn't be surprised really at any of it, as I always watch them because I like to see how the competitors face challenges (I usualy have a private stab at their challenges for fun), but at times some of the comments are a bitt naff to say the least. They surely all realise that it's all a bit of a raffle and there's only going to be one winner, so going home is more to be expected than coming as a surprise; sort of Strictly come Painting but with a more amateur base? Ah well, I'll be there in front of the T.V anyway, I love anything to do with painting. Mambo anybody? 😆
After reading all this, I'm not going to miss the programme this Sunday. Syd, not all people who practice art know about art, and some, how to use pigments. I mentioned on one occasion about liking monochrome work, at the society exhibition only to be asked by a fellow member 'what is monochrome art' I politely explained. Another wanted to know, in art class, if a watercolour wash over the top of his oil painting would enhance it. We all have to learn, I suppose.
Maybe the artists should do a running commentary on their own painting method, and why they work that way, each being allotted a certain amount of time.
Funny thing about art, it's about creating something in paint (in this instance and context) almost based exclusively on the Napoleonic "picture worth a thousand words" principle. Truth be known I rarely listen much to the twitterati props cluttering up the studio in this show. The show's about amateur painters and their work and the more rules applied to what is basically a simple "do your best" task, the more confusion and chance of everybody turning out look alike photography in paint to please judges. I know this may be boring, but art is about artists, not teachers, judges or T.V celebrities. This is competition, not painting lessons. The teaching basics must have been absorbed somewhere down the line or the contestants wouldn't have been chosen. After that, give them the task and let them get on with it without the instructors governing the contest till time's up. Keep the public out of it altogether as far as them not knowing a waltz from a tango and allowing feeling, sentiment and liking certain people personally to affect judgements. Judge by results regardless of all else. Oh, but wait a minute, it's a T.V show and T.V needs viewers and favourites not who can paint best. So then, how do you judge by results please in a painting contest when we on here who paint can't even agree on a winner and the judges disagree on air? Er, ????? Ah well, it's good entertainment anyway, so take your partners for a splash around the pallette. 😆
