Hello  I have been researching my great uncle Patrick (Percy) Cundy ROI off and on for a number of years with little success. The archives at the V&A are closed until 2024 so I thought I would reach out on this forum if anyone has any expertise they could share. Particularly, I am curious about the Royal Institute of Oil Painters membership certificate we have. Curiously the date says founded in 1883 when online says founded in 1882. Also, it is signed by the president Adrian Hill. The date is 1966 on the certificate but online research shows he was not president until 1968. Has anyone on this forum seen a membership certificate like this before? Or have any suggestions on where else I can look whilst the archives are closed? Kind regards  Kelly
There are certainly some discrepancies here I agree! I can definitely vouch for the signature of Adrian Hill as I have some of his original drawings… so I would suggest that he was indeed president at that time. All I can suggest is that you email Haidee-Jo-Summers VPROI, Google her website. She has just been elected as Vice President and may, or should, be able to confirm the founding date at least. She may also have access to the official list of Past Presidents. You can mention my name and tell her  that I’ve directed you to her via the Painters Online forum.
