Hi there, I have this painting which I identified to depict Whitby Harbour UK.
Signature looks like J.H.Hale but couldn't find anything about him.
In the back the maker of the board is dated at around 1875.
It does look like a rough sketch on the scene rather then a finished painting.
Let me know if you can help

Undoubtedly the recognisable landmark of Whitby and a reasonably good signature.
Apart from that, it’s in need of a clean and possibly some restoration, but I’d have to examine it to determine exactly how much was needed.
It does look like its been painted by an amateur hand, that’s my view anyway - there’s a whole host of obvious tell-tale signs pointing to that.

That sounds like a fascinating find! J.H. Hale doesn’t ring any bells for me either, but maybe reaching out through custom social media app development services or artuk could help. Would love to see a pic!

That sounds like a fascinating find! J.H. Hale doesn’t ring any bells for me either, but the Whitby Harbour subject and 1875 board date are intriguing. Maybe try local UK art forums or artuk? They’ve helped me ID obscure works before. Would love to see a pic!I’m wondering if this is AI…new member and it has no substance to it! Hardly that fascinating! There are tens of thousands of old and unidentified paintings by amateur artists available to buy - I’m not sure why you would want to buy one, but I’ll move on. The author of this post has reached out to an art forum, that’s what this is… ArtUK, Artprice and several others offer a service which is a paid for subscription package! They don’t hold any information on amateur artists which is obvious, basically because there aren’t any auction records! You’ve asked for a pic… there is a pic! You should know all this, unless you’re a BOT…
