Hello all, Can anyone offer some insight to this artist and painting.  Came out of my Dads house after he passed away and I don't know if it's of any value or not.  The artist is G Stainton but definitely NOT George Staunton.
Looks like a very thinly painted oil on compressed hardboard. Parts of the painting appear to be stained, (the sky in particular), perhaps it was varnished at some point and it would benefit from being removed. Whilst it does have some well drawn details throughout the composition, it has definitely been painted by an amateur hand, and so there won’t be any recorded reference to this artist in the archives! Value wise is minimal I’m afraid, a few pounds at most, the frame doesn’t do anything to enhance the value either! If you don’t want to keep it, it would be nice if it could find a new home in the actual pub…assuming that it still is a pub of course!
I'm about to give it to the pub landlord today.  Just didn't want to think I was giving away tat, that's all.
I’m sure he will be delighted, and a fitting gesture!

Ah.... what a good idea; in a (much) better frame, and perhaps with a light cleaning, it'll sit in the pub nicely: as, indeed, would I..... It's always a pity when we can't ascribe a significant value to a painting, but the give away really is the very faithful reproduction of a rather empty scene, apart from the building itself, and, as Alan says, the thinness of the paint.  When you think, he said, getting lyrical .... someone put a lot of effort into this 70 years ago; it's rather touching to read that it'll go to the pub it depicts; and it certainly isn't "tat" - it's an honest bit of work. I just wish every artist would sign their work as clearly as Mr Stainton did - it would save hours of time looking for the artists, and trying to decipher some scrawl: well done, Mr Stainton - an example I wish others would follow!
Thank you all for the feedback. It prompted me to further into the painting as well as the history of the pub, which is now called The Dalesman Sedbergh It was fascinating to discover all the changes it's gone through over the years, losing and gaining doors and windows, and most interestingly, the complete change of the façade. Looking at the street view, some buildings still have the original-looking façade. Thank you again for the feedback .
Interesting, thank you for sharing, and Robert and I appreciate your reply!
