I have not been on the forum for a long time, but I just felt I wanted to ask other members the question, what is the point of making comments on artisits work on the gallery, when there seems to be a number who put thier work on just to be seen, using it as a showcase and do not have the courtesy to reply to the many good comments they quite often recieve?, or is it just me looking at the reason for the gallery in the wrong way.

It's not just you Malcolm. I also get annoyed by those who merely use the gallery as a showcase and fail to acknowledge comments received or comment on the work of others. If they can't show a little courtesy and join in the spirit of the site they soon join my list of artists whose work no longer receives any comments from me.

Some people may just not be that great with words; and some of our posters on the Gallery don't have English as a first language, either.
Although that won't be true of some who just post and never comment or respond to comments - for myself, not that I use the Gallery very often (while still having quite a large collection of work here, for those who'd like to search it out with the chequebook flapping and purse and wallet akimbo) I always try to respond to comments: out of plain common courtesy, and also out of the more self-interested knowledge that if I want to be noticed, I'd really better had......... The more you participate on POL, the more response you get.

I have this morning, commented on an artist's work, which is beautiful, and on which on a previous occasion, fed up of my comments receiving no recognition/ being taken for granted, I asked him how it was that he never replied. I cannot remember quite how he responded but I am waiting to see whether he does so on my latest comment today.. I find it difficult to remember and re-trace all the work on which I have commented, to see whether or not there has been a reply. But that a comment is worthy of acknowledgement, I certainly agree. ..

I always respond to comments with thanks as I think it's lovely that somebody has taken the time, although sometimes it is a few days before I catch up. But I wouldn't know whether people thank me or not when I comment on their work as you don't receive any notification from the site and I haven't got time to keep checking back. Anyway the gallery has moved well on after a few days and I can't even remember whose work I've liked and/or commented on. I suppose my point is that I don't expect anything in return when I offer a compliment to others, and I don't really know how you are keeping tabs on people so much that you know whether they ever comment on anybody's work or thank anybody!
I totally accept that people contributing to the gallery page will have different expectations in doing so and that some may not wish to respond to comments. I just worry that threads like this on the forum will actually put people off posting their work for fear of 'doing it wrong' or upsetting folk.

The answer I think is to follow certain artists which I do and then one doesn't miss their paintings because often they have moved onto another page .I agree with Andre I have a sense of loyalty towards other artists who take the time and effort to view and comment on my work. Also somehow I feel as if I am beginning to think I know the people who are sending comments.

Although I am not posting any work on the Gallery for the moment, I still comment on the work of other members. I always posted a 'thank you'-comment when I got comments on my works. I find it quite normal to show my appreciation when members take the time to have a look at and post a comment on my work. I noticed that some didn't made the effort to thank for comments or post any comments on other members work. In my opinion, being a member of a site is giving and taking. That gives me the feeling that some really became friends. Because English is not my first language, my comments are not very long but I do my best and I hope they express my feelings :) Mia

Being a new member too - I fairly quickly worked out that its considered polite to post a new comment thanking people for their words, which I try to do every time even if my reply covers several posts... I'm trying to find my way round the forum as well and like to think I'll contribute to this as well in the coming months. Its a really great website and certainly has given me a real boost.
