I have used the search button get in touch with POL folk to contact, thank or just ask a question. Always have got a reply. Our art club has just had one of the 4 appraisals/critiques in the year, which I organise booking for a fee a pro to pass comments on members work submitted that day. They can be over complimentary sometimes but also try not to be over critical. I have just received crit to me from a fellow committee member for booking a pro who was too pleasant and even counted the number of the "nice" word the pro used. As far as I know, the fellow comm didn't submit a work for judgment that day.
Sometimes I feel that I comment too much but that is because I like so many paintings. I also like to encourage people if they are new. However, I agree that some artists do use the gallery to showcase their work only and I feel petty if I think that they won't thank me so I won't bother. I did take to task someone a few months ago who did bother to thank people and also comment on other artists' works and this was because she wrote a blog intimating that what good were other artists' comments on her work if no one was interested in buying. I was a little incensed to say the least and said so, but I also gave her the benefit of the doubt as to her meaning as English wasn't her first language and I thought perhaps I had misunderstood. She did e-mail me later to explain a little more, but I'm not sure if she didn't still feel the same.
Hee hee .... well, you were right! I never mind advice if it's right - in fact I never mind advice, it's just that I reserve the right not to agree with it sometimes. The person who expected to sell here - mentioned by Adele - had unfortunately completely mistaken the nature of POL: very rarely do artists buy from other artists, and if potential customers do visit this site, they've never got round to me. It's a wee bit unrealistic to expect to be able to sell from a site that allows you to show your work for free - and has no payment facility anyway. Now and then, you realize that someone may be a very good artist, but - not to mince words - as thick as two very short planks. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
<div>I agree Sylvia. I had been encouraging an artist who is fairly new to painting who felt that she was not as good as other artists. She put a WIP on the gallery but didn't ask for help, so I asked if she needed some help with it. She was open to ideas and I gave her a couple, but I did stress that this was only my opinion. She was happy about it. I think I know the painting you were referring to and, hopefully she will take on board the advice. I put my paintings on, not so people can say they are lovely (although that is great) but also to offer some advice if they feel I need it. I welcome that.</div>
What an interesting thread ! It's the most amazing thing when you receive a comment for your work. The fact that someone takes the time to click on your art, study it and then type a comment is hugely complimentary. This surely deserves a thank you, at the very least? Having said that, I'm sure that I've been guilty of forgetting to reply occasionally. I'm only human, after all ! I also agree with Adele, Its great to get a "That's Lovely" comment but it's also really great to get a bit of well intentioned criticism. As a newbie that doesn't go to art club or classes, it is the only informed input that I receive and therefore, invaluable to me. Bob
