I am looking and considering getting out there more. Currently my word is being seen and gaining 'some' interest with discussions on commissioned work. However I want to get my work seen more. I have a WIX acct and on FB and Twitter. Is is best to have my work shown in a gallery or arrange an exhibition of sorts at an event. I do feel that I am restricted by doing commissions mostly (not complaining as these pay) however I want to do more, sell prints etc. What would be the best course of action? Many thanks Ants
There is no easy way, let's be totally frank about it. I don't know what WIX Is but I do know that FB And Twitter are in my book anyway a complete waste of time. I am assuming that it is sales that you are looking for, or is it recognition of your work? If it's sales you can try all the usual online sites, Artfinder and the like, there are loads of them, however, in my case sales are slow, very slow and payment is also very slow, and the commission structure very high. So, what is the answer?, well, you can try and get your work into a gallery, but they are very selective, they will almost inevitably have their walls filled with current artists' work, and will probably be reluctant to take you on board, and I speak from experience. Alternatively arrange an exhibition in say a library, local arts council gallery, conference room at a hotel or wherever you can find. This will be expensive and as always no guarantee of selling your work but with advertising you will get your name about. AS for selling prints, well, do your sums first, if you are printing as a lithograph, limited edition or open edition you will have to order in large quantities and needless to say that it is an expensive business and will take donkey's years to get rid of them all. GIclee printing is the better option for limited quantities but again the initial set up fees and subsequent prints are so expensive. I checked this out recently and each print would have cost me around £25, so you have got to be selling at £50 and that's without a frame, prospective buyers won't pay that for prints, not in my area anyway, I know I wouldn't. There are many artists out there who have prints for sale, but I do wonder if they are making it pay or is it perhaps one of those self satisfaction things to see your work in print, who knows. So, to sum up, there is no easy way to either sell your art or for your work to be recognised, but good luck and you may have fun trying.
I have found word of mouth and FB works for me. Also I do not have a number of paintings at home as all my work is commission based. Time to start looking around.
You haven't actually said what it is that you paint, but as you work mainly on commissions I would take a guess at animal portraits etc, in which case none of my above mentioned outlets would be suitable anyway. Word of mouth or referrals is one of the best ways and I guess that social websites may also be helpful in that line. Where else to go though is another matter, there must be places out there.
This is the WIX site I mentioned, its a free hosting website http://anthonyholder01.wix.com/antsholderart I am moving into Military based portraits .
