Presumably if you pay a subscription and receive your magazine by post, it’s cheaper for you, and easier for the publishers to post. I wasn’t aware that The Artist if bought in shops had freebies attached? In my case I live in a village where I would have to travel a minimum of ten miles to buy any decent magazine so it’s much more convenient to have it pop through my letterbox once a month!

Basically it’s all down to the extra cost of the print run, plus the additional weight adding to the postage costs.
As Tessa has pointed out, annual subscribers receive their magazines at a discounted rate, it’s all as simple as that!
I must confess that it is a pity though, Dawn is looking into accessing some of these supplements online, but that’s not available as yet.

Economics, basically. I suppose you could have an enhanced subscription rate, so that these supplements could be added, but someone would have to manage that. Freebies are generally intended as inducements to buy, enabling a magazine to stand out from the dozens of others in a store.
But there's so much available on this website, much of which is free, that I don't think subscribers with an internet connection are losing out.
