A few weeks ago I gave a picture to a friend, painted on a circular canvas. He took it into a framers in Harborne (near Birmingham) and was quoted £80, but there would be a wait as the frames were out of stock. From memory it was 40cm diameter. He has just been back in and was told the frames that were expected in August would be delayed and it was quite possible that there wouldn't be any more at all. He has decided to have a square frame with a circular hole in the mount, but that is costing £135.  The picture framer had no idea why circular frames have suddenly disappeared or why they may not be available again. Has anyone had the same problem, and does anyone know why it is happening? Circular canvases are not that uncommon after all, I use a lot of them. I presume the framer was ordering them ready made rather than producing his own.

Peter look on line I use easy frame  the one without the hyphen.  They are reasonable and I get things within a week. Though I think the option of square frame and circular mount sounds a good option. Hope he gets it sorted. Good old Google .
He's already ordered it now Sylvia but I'll do that another time.
Hope it looks good ...
The frame will!!
Picture framers don’t generally make oval or round frames! It requires a good deal of craftsmanship to make the individual sections from wood, and then add the embellishments. Not to mention the cost! A skill which is probably rare to find these days! The ones you can buy off-the-shelf are likely to have been mass produced using a mould, and from plastic/resin types of material. Obviously a totally different process than making a standard shape frame from lengths of moulding and then using a Morso guillotine for the mitres.
I imagine this chap was buying them in ready made, probably from China. Why they have suddenly become unavailable though seems odd.
