Still Life is one of my favourite things to do and there are certain objects which I use frequently. Anyone else do this? I suppose it might be a place which you enjoy painting - from different angles or in different conditions.
Got to 'fess up here - I hate still life.  Not so much seeing them, as painting them - so I very rarely do it.  I have favourite objects - but no wish to paint them: eg, my pocket watches.  I suppose you wouldn't count botanicals - e.g. paintings or drawings of pot plants - as still life .... I wouldn't at all mind having a crack at one of those.  These things are hard to explain of course, but I wonder what it is that makes still life so attractive to you as a painting project? Those are very beautiful paintings, in any case: even I can see that!
Ha ha Robert, I know you hate Still Life. I don’t know exactly why I love painting SL …I think it’s because I notice something beautiful and I want to paint it. Maybe just the way the light falls or squeezes between things….I could go on for quite a long time but I won’t. Briefly, light, colour, texture and positioning are what attract me….oh I’m going to be thinking about this for ages now.
Ps, I often wondered what the person who made that jug would feel if she saw it in a painting. Juliet Beaumont from Holmfirth, Yorkshire.
You paint an excellent still life Marjorie, generally using a light source to help with your tones and add impact. I don’t paint many, they just don’t excite me I suppose, although I did enjoy painting an area of my studio a while back, bottles and paint tubes etc as part of a feature in TA. We had a variety of animal skulls to draw at college, I did enjoy drawing them! Plants are classed as still life I believe, I only have one plant, which is just about hanging on…
Now animal skulls would definitely not attract me Alan - but of course, I can see their value in an art course. Re other things I like painting.. that beach in front of me ( above left) has been painted many times.

Why not send the lady a note with some photographs of how you have used her jug in your art. I bet she would be thrilled to bits. They are lovely paintings.
Denise, I bought that jug more than 30 years ago when I lived in Holmfirth. I did google but no info on whether she’s still around…she’d be a fair age now if she is. But I have a friend in the area, maybe I’ll try again.
I love setting up and painting still life.I also love looking at them. Yours are beautiful Marjorie. I was horrified to discover very recently during reading about vanitas still life that the genre is bottom of the pile . Ah well, I will continue to gaze at the Dutch masters and wish I owned one.
