Do you listen to music to help you paint? If so who do you listen to, why do you listen to that style and do you think it influences your work at all in any way? If you don't do music do you do anything else or nothing at all? I personally listen to more easy listening like Nora Jones and Gregory Porter. They help me block out the outside noise, without making me want to get up and sing and dance 😂. Although theres a few of Gregory Porters that are a bit groovy lol. I dont think they influence my work in any way but they do help me concentrate so i can do a better job.

Sometimes Classic FM although I do get a bit fed up with the silly adverts. If not I have a large selection of CDs: Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler and my all time favourite for when I'm painting is Einaudi.
Yep - can't beat a bit of background music. I play classical guitar for a living (two gigs in Saffron Walden this Sunday if you're in the nice part of Essex) so the off-duty music has to be something very different but still highly-skilled guitar excellence. Lots of Prog - Rush, Muse, early Queen. Lots of electric blues and blues-based rock - Joe Bonamassa, Slash, and I've been getting into Metallica as I'm working on their stuff with students; and some non-specific stuff - Foo Fighters, Frusciante-era Red Hot Chilli Peppers and so on Does it influence my art? Dunno; maybe I should make a conscious effort to let it
My listening to music has been affected of late by failing hearing somewhat (another hearing test due soon) but my taste is vast and I have a huge collection. I tend to treat it like art appreciation: if I like it the rest is unimportant. I can be influenced by music totally, be it Asturias, Classical Gas, Guitar Tango, Julio Iglesis or Nessun Dorma. Do I hear it when painting,? undoubtedly, and often put something relevant up on Youtube whilst painting. I was a big fan of John William's group "Sky?" when they were together. Being a lifetime dance fan, I hear music "When there's no one there" as the song goes..I'm hearing Victor Sylvester playing "Mr Sandman" as I write. It's art, anybody for a foxtrot? ...😆
I listen to a multitude of things, everything from progressive jazz-metal to Bjork to classical (particularly liking Ludivico Einaudi at the moment) or I often listen to online lectures, radio or interviews while I paint. I often find I am in a sort of trance like state while I paint it's like it just sort of happens on its own and I feel like a passenger, music effects my emotional state significantly but I am not sure how much that influences what I produce.
I don't necessarily listen to music while I'm painting - a nasty habit of conducting the orchestra with the brush has led to a few unfortunate occurrences, on canvas and walls - but if I need a bit of help to get me started, as I often do, then Mozart seems to do the trick.
I think I was the one who mentioned Disturbed first with Fiona backing me up. I have it on my favourite playlist, it gives me tingles! Jen ,I'm not a classical fan but I love musicals and because I was a 60s girl that and the 70s are my favourite, soul music from back then too (soul today is not the same). I like listening to Gold on the radio.
Your grandson not only needs a break, he DESERVES one - Mo Evans is the name, he has a great voice, he's a talented songwriter, but I suspect he doesn't want to sell out for quick and easy fame. If an old horror like me, devoted to classical music and superannuated rock music, can see how good he is, why can't others? There is so much god-awful, weep-inducing tripe out there - dammit, Sylv: I'm almost angry that your grandson is still awaiting his break! He's intelligent, dammit - perhaps that's the problem ....
I listen to all sorts from jazz to grunge when I'm painting...prefer something with a bit of kick though, and as loud as the family and neighbours will allow. Find that fast, loud music tends to perk me up a bit :) The two exceptions to that rule are Zero 7 and Nick Drake, which puts me in the right mood every time.
Did some more work on the Ferrari last night and listened to.....wait for it.....Radio 4. Think I must be having some sort of crisis...
I'm 50% with you there Sylvia :) Listen to Radio 4 on the way to/from work and at home when I'm working/painting, but also discovered 6 Music last year. That's opened my eyes to so many new acts/genres, love it! If you like exploring new music, it's a great way to go.
