I wonder if anybody saw this program last night, it was fascinating and inspiring. The series has looked at such things as early cave art and classical Greece... last night was about the renaissance and competition between the Arab and Western world to build the most fantastic house of god. So it starts off with lots of architectural content but then moves on to paintings. It showed the allegory of a painter which was a new one on me, and works by Velazquez and Caravaggio but the section which struck me was the casting of Perseus and Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini. What an amazing work, I will surely be drawing it soon. If you haven't had a chance to catch any of these I'd say it is worth the effort... Mary Beard presented one which spoke about Michelangelo's David and that was superb but this one with Sacha wotsitsface was its equal...and maybe its just because greatness is inspirational in any form these amazing statues and castings make me want to try sculpture.
I'm adding an art programme I watched this morning onto your thread Davey for added interest. It was a B.B.C production called "Painting the Holy Land" with Lachlan Goudie. I never really rated him that much as an artist, but this was a fascinating sketch-book journey through Jerusalem during Holy Week. Very well done, interesting and factual with some great views of the Holy Land. It can probably be got for a while on BB.C I-player. Well worth a watch. .
