That wasn’t the series I was referring to Gerry, but great that Tintern Abbey has inspired you.
I was referring to a small series of ink and watercolour paintings of Sandon Church. I’ve painted every aspect of it, thought they might give you some inspiration and even ideas.
You’re embarking on a very interesting project here, one I’d love to do myself.

I too take photos, I'd love to have the time to do outdoor work. I have a few local churches and chapels tucked away in the Welsh hillside, they are old, small, and I think attractive. I've been in the painting doldrums, your post has nudged me to get some of those photos out and start, something. Even go and take more photos.Are you painting outdoors or from a picture?Will be from photographs that I have taken. So I will have seen the places, chosen the view, and had a little time just to observe and soak up.

...work in progress;
I'm happy with the idea of not necessarily having an entrance in the paintings. Thank you all for your input. At the size I am experimenting with, the resulting shapes and compositions that I find interesting, will hopefully be very clear. And once I get into them a bit more, as a series, they may actually be cute and delightful.
This first painting, albeit work in progress, has also led me to more thoughts (that's one of the benefits of new projects and experiments is it not) -
I am wondering whether this subject matter is inappropriate at this scale, as I feel the details are not as fine as I'd like, but, converesly, wonder whether it is absolutely appropriate at this scale (because, even though I find beauty in the details, what attracts me are the really interesting overall shapes and silhouettes of these wonderful little churches). I might feel able to answer that question stronger once I've painted it.
I also wonder whether I ought to invest in hot pressed smoother watercolour paper, even though I am happy using my default 'textural' linework, I am wondering whether it's just a bit too sketch-like as a result of using rough paper.
The mount window size is 11 x 7 cm
Thanks folks
(PS, when I originally said 'small' paintings, I was referring to the painting size but now actually realise I should have added that small is referring to the churches too)
