Wonder what happens to POL contributors who suddenly disappear from the site.
Here they are Carole.
Ha ha John? What a happy bunch.
Hi Carole what do you mean by “contributors disappeared.” Can you be more specific about disappearing contributors. How about this a great Poem by…. Hughes Mearns Yesterday, upon the stair, I met a man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today I wish, I wish he'd go away... When I came home last night at three The man was waiting there for me But when I looked around the hall I couldn't see him there at all! Go away, go away, don't you come back any more! Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door... (slam!) Last night I saw upon the stair A little man who wasn't there He wasn't there again today Oh, how I wish he'd go away... Enjoy

Hi John sorry to sound vague. I notice people who make loads of comments and post frequently on POL. Often these people suddenly become absent and I can’t help wondering what became of them. It seems soulless not to know anything further about them. Just wondered if there could be a way of knowing if  they were well or not.
Carole , unfortunately as people leave or stop posting for whatever reason there is no way of finding out what happened. It’s possibly to use the messaging system that is on the gallery under each person name , however it’s no guarantee that you will get a response , especially if the person has passed away etc . I’m talking  about the people who posted for long periods no as seems to be a trend at the moment where people join the forums/ gallery and post quite a bit for a short period then just stop and we don’t see them again. We are an aging community and quite a few staunch members have sadly not posted for a while, we have to make assumptions as to the reasons why , bit easier if we know someone is unwell or are one of the elder members but even then it’s guess work. Relative probably don’t know how to access the site and don’t think to inform us of the reason , can understand that if they are grieving or looking after their ill relative. I realise this doesn’t answer your question full but it the best I can offer and suspect that my fellow moderators will say much the same . I do keep in touch with a few people who no longer post but that’s because we messaged each other before they stopped posting for whatever reason, Sylvia is one who unfortunately due to deterioration eye sight is no longer able to access the forum or gallery.
Would I be wrong in saying the community on POL is very small in comparison to the number of people who use the site. I am so pleased there are a number of regulars on the site because I would probably soon loose interest as POL would have no heart beat. Lifeless in fact.
I think there is a group of people who take part in the forum as well as posting on the gallery , a lot of members read the posts on the forum but don’t join the the discussion fir a great variety of reasons . Far more use the gallery as can be seen simply by looking at the amount of people posting who we never see on the forum. The gallery it great and it’s what the site is about posting paintings with the opportunity to discuss artwork of any kind on the forum , without the forum I personally think the site would be less attractive as all we would have is a gallery to comment on the paintings posted. It’s things like WIP, discussion about different paints , techniques etc that are the living part of the site , even the odd disagreements give it some life and mirrors what happens off site to some degree.
I think it's discouraging for people who might look at the forum for the first time and see some sections where nothing has been posted for six months or more. I try to do my bit but I can't post under water colour or oils because I don't use them. Maybe the forum needs to have fewer wider sections?
To some degree I think the problem is that it’s a little boring. Moderators keep a grip on discussions that might get a bit heated, and I appreciate most mods on most sites, but disagreement makes for interesting conversation. It’s a fine line between having an opinion and getting personal but it can be done. I’m sure people have many opinions about artists, movements, history, contemporary art and styles, but it’s not happening here. It’s very cosy but like I said, a little boring. Apologies if I upset anyone.
Brett just to put the record straight, moderators only step in when it becomes far to personal and  it’s abusive etc  otherwise we let it run it’s course.  Yes it does get boring but hat simple because so few bring topics to the forum, or starts a discussion and don’t respond to the answers posted , almost lime well I ask but not really bothered about the response.
