I know what you mean about the ref photos, it's sometimes hard to find one. You are right to use the 'grid method', it's long established, tried and tested, et al. For the few paintings I've copied I used the grid method.
Here's a ref pic from one of my favorite artists, Alphonse Mucha. If artists like him used this method that's recommendation enough for me.
(He's using a 'photo'...shock horror! But let's not go there.)
I'll watch your progress with interest Denise.

Thanks for your comments Paul, Lewis and Alan. It's all about learning different methods Alan and I'm always happy to do that, especially if the end result will be better. Jenny, I stupidly, lined off the black and white photo only to realise what a big mistake that was. I'll continue with it though because it's all practice. Your image is much clearer and when I do it again, I will use a coloured image and probably scale it up again. It's once I'm happy with the drawing of the image, I'll then think about moving on to painting and thinking about size. As for it being a task, I think, if it doesn't work out, I would have gained from the experience no matter what. For example, already, I've learned to use a new tool in art, the grid method. Now I know how to upsize or downsize without just taking a guess at it. So, all good. Thanks for postings the image also.

I'll have the sketch finished tomorrow sometime. Then, when I get the things I need, I'll start it all over again. You may think it's a waste of time sketching the same thing over and over again but I really want to get to know the sketch before I paint it. I also need practice with the grid method and improving the sketch and I can only do that by practising it. Here I am so far.
