Can anyone one give suggestions on how to find who this artist was please.  There is a signature on the back of the painting but I can not for the life of me decipher the signature  Thankyou

Looks like M E Stedman Sept 1892. Would have been interesting to have seen the painting as well!
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

Can you not read cursive writing?  Sorry, and all that, but this is clearly M.E. Stedman - not a lot of mystery about it, really... I'd be a bit more worried about the fastening of the picture to the mount, to be honest; but then - haven't seen the picture.  It needs a bit of attention. The date has been over-written - I wonder why anyone did that?  One of several additional touches that hasn't helped much.   I'm sorry, I know I'm being irritable and fractious, but come on - this isn't in any way a difficult signature, and - show us the painting!
