Hang on Studio Wall
Message
I recently mislaid a picture that I wanted to put on my wall.  These pictures occasionally get a re-shuffle.  The missing pic was a 6 x 4 inch portrait of 'Mona Lisa's Mum.'  Couldn't find it.  I take photos of my pictures, but, apparently, not this one.  It was gorn!  But I was fairly certain I'd posted it on POL a while back.  So I went into 'my art' and started looking through last year's stuff.  There it was, so I've copied it onto my PC.  The original is no more, unless it turns up under the carpet (or somewhere) later. Whilst looking, I thought our personal galleries on POL look much better, and they've included the number of views each image has received.   I've long held the view that, as far as my own work goes, and how others see it, are two very different things.  In short they don't like the same pics I like.  Nothing new, I'm betting you feel the same about your work, and how others see it.   So I thought I'd do a quick survey to test this theory, our galleries are laid out in a way that makes it fairly easy to do.  I have some of my pictures hanging on the walls in our living room, and spare bedroom.  The spare bedroom has this computer in it, and also acts as a mini-art gallery, that I reshuffle every year or three.  There are 7 pictures in the living room, and 19 in the spare bedroom. So, the theory I'm testing is...'if the POL viewers were selecting which of my pictures were hung on my walls, would they make the same choice as me.' I need some kind of scoring system...to keep it simple I'll just use the number of views as a 'score.'  (Flawed, I know.  Unless they commented or 'LIKED' it, we only know that they were interested enough to click on the thumbnail, and 'score' a view.)  Next I need to know what's a GOOD score.  When I found my missing 'Mona Lisa's Mum' she had 332 views, whilst all the other images near her had far lower scores...100 - 200.  So I set the 'good score' at 300 and above. So, how did my pictures on the wall fare? Of the 26 pictures hanging on my walls only FOUR would have been chosen on the viewer rating. Pen and ink drawing of FAGIN.  (345 views) Deco Girl (Mixed media painting)  (588 views) A Bar at the Folie Bergere  (My copy of Manet's painting)  (450 views) Dickens Characters (A frame holding 8 postcard size pics)  (398 views) Of these four, 'Deco Girl' I like the least (obviously I like it, or it wouldn't be on the wall) but....(?) Some of the paintings/drawings I like best 'scored' very low under this system. I used to do the occasional digital image, only one of these was rated 'good'  (It isn't on my wall). I'd expected this result, but was still a little surprised to find some pictures got relatively low scores.  None of this means anything, I'll still make whatever pictures I want.  I just find it interesting, and if you're still with me, I hope you do too.  Because it will certainly apply to your own pictures.  Luckily, I'm not in the selling game.  I wouldn't have a clue which pictures to lug down to the gallery. Hmmnn...shall I post this?  Why not?
I’m glad you did post this Lew, as it does make you think about your own work. The paintings we have up at home that I have painted number 7. All of which were picked by my wife , I don’t dislike any of them but I would only picked one of them. The one that is my least favourite is hang facing where I sit, I’ve come to like it a bit more over the past few years. I’m sure other have similar experiences with their paintings etc.
One thing about the number of views for individual paintings, Lew - sometimes numbers might be a lot lower than normal because there has been one of the periodic influxes of multiple paintings - so possibly not that less folk liked it, but just that nobody it?!
Thank you Dixie and Margaret.  I'm not making any kind of big deal over this, just a bit of idle speculation that I found of interest because, for the first time, I had the viewing numbers for ALL my pictures.  Obviously people are going to like, and dislike, different things.  It would be a sorry old world if we were all the same.   Events mean I often don't have time to look through the POL gallery, I'm certain to have missed many pictures that I'd like.
