Recently I completed an oil painting of a group of boats at rest which received splendid comments from fellow painters on this great site , I also received similar reactions on a couple of groups online and it went on display at my Sunday gallery here in Dublin , a chap from London has made me a decent offer for it unframed ( a man of impeccable taste :) )
I posted the painting up on LinkedIn and again lovely comments and then .... a criticism of the painting ! followed by a detailed critique by an abstract artist .... followed by another ...... next gentleman that critiques the painting I shall challenge to a duel as for the ladies I shall just storm off in a dignified huff :)

I know the painting that you refer to Dermot, and I did also give it a positive comment, also well done on the sale.
As for negative critique, well, it doesn't actually bother me and of course I respect that other artist's have their own opinion, but also you don't have to agree with it, I rarely do. Usually in my case on POL it's petty nit-pickers having a gripe about the accuracy of a piece and even at times regarding the title, pathetic. As I always tell them, I paint what I feel, not necessarily what I see, I have an expensive camera which does that adequately, they don't understand of course, it can be just as important to leave something out of a painting, and I have made my point about 'photorealism' many times along with a good few others, It leaves me flat.

Constructive criticism is fine as long as the critic understands what you are trying to achieve and not assume that you want to do what he/she wants. Recently I had a critical comment on a painting in an exhibition, in which I had good sales, from a non painter. At first I dismissed the comment but later on reflection I decided it had some merit. Perhaps sometimes we have to bite the bullet and think carefully before rejecting all criticism. Having said that simple destructive comment can safely be ignored.

I usually only comment on paintings that appeal to me, if I don't like the painting I don't comment, it's as simple as that. I am only an amateur but I think I know what is good work from a talented artist. How sad people must be to make derogatory comments, haven't they anything better to do?
And Dermot, for the record I think your work is wonderful.
