Dame Elizabeth Violet Blackadder, Mrs Houston, DBE, RA, RSA, HonRWA, was a Scottish painter and printmaker. She was the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. In 1962 she began teaching at Edinburgh College of Art where she continued until her retirement in 1986. Wikipedia I'm not sure when I first became aware of this artist ,but I remember standing in the Summer Exhibition at the RA some forty years ago. There on the wall was a piece of brown paper with Iris painted on it.I think in watercolour .  The paint had run and was in dribbles down the brown paper. But the Iris were magic and I stood for an age just looking. A flower lady and a cat person. A regular theme in Blackadder's work during the 1960s was the still life. Some favourite domestic objects appeared several times, such as a dark coffee pot, small painted boxes, patterned cloths and richly coloured oriental rugs bought on her travels. These are laid out in compositions full of spatial ambiguity. Blackadder chose the objects for their colour and shape but equally they have a special personal meaning for her. She is fascinated by exotic plants and fruits and especially pomegranates 'which as well as being visually exciting with their jewel-like seeds always seemed to me to be particularly poetic with mythic connections.' Personally  I don't "get" this painting but that is personal

An interesting artist.  The flowers are precise, botanical illustrations.  The cats less precise, it's almost as if they are painted by a difference hand.  The abstract with what appears to be a coffee pot in it....???...I have no idea what that's about.  A lady with many strings to her bow.
Another one here I consider incongruous , Fifeshire Farm.
I like this one, energetic pen and brush strokes in abundance - I’ve always liked her work!
In looking for her work, I came across this - if you go on to the site, you can take a tour of the exhibition. I like this one of the cats, lovely colours.

I've not come across her before now, Sylvia. Interesting and varied work. I prefer the floral pictures.  I thought I'd look up the symbolism of pomegranates, wondering if they have any personal meanings for her. https://lithub.com/a-secret-symbolic-history-of-pomegranates/
It's fascinating how art can leave a lasting impression. Dame Elizabeth Violet Blackadder's work clearly made a memorable impact on you, with her Iris painting standing out despite the imperfect medium.
