The WIP thread is light on new works... At times I'm self conscious of filling it with my work, so I hold back. Would be so nice to see other art in there....more often.
Ah, don't hold back. Probably most of us work in one fell swoop - haven't the patience to photograph the stages, or something similar. However! I shall endeavour to rectify this so far as my own poor efforts can do so. At the moment, all I have to offer is a blank canvas sitting on the easel waiting for me to identify what I want to do with it.
I did post a couple when it was first introduced last year. I had absolutely NO response and made it quite clear that I wouldn't be participating further. Of course, it could be that my work in progress was so interesting that everyone was left speechless!
Why not give it another go Alan, now that people are more used to the thread you might get a lot of response. And I for one would be interested to see how your beautiful landscapes develop.

I am trying to find you on the Gallery but nothing seems to come up under various versions of AGHolder. What name do you post under please?
I think WIP is the most interesting subject for the forum, I'm always keen to see how other people put their work together. So I guess I ought to be putting more in myself, not just leaving it to others. I've been following AG's work, but don't always have anything to say...other than the fact that I admire it. I've also been following Daveyboyz's Bargue thread - which is a work in progress. I take Alan's point about apparent lack of interest, it does seem to be that only the forum stalwarts comment. Perhaps we have to accept that people look but don't comment...the last time I did a work in progress it got nearly 500 views. Over 3000 have viewed AG's 100 thread, and getting on for 700 have looked at David's thread...that can't be just down to the stalwarts. I tend to work fairly quickly, I lose interest in anything that's taking too long. But there's nothing to stop me taking photos as I go. So AG's right, there ought to be more WIP from all we artists. As I like to follow them, I ought to contribute something. With me it'll have to be 'WORKS' in progress, because I'm jumping around all over that place. So I'll start a thread along those lines. Otherwise I'll be making one post and it'll be goodnight Vienna. You've been warned. Lew.
Perhaps we should make it clear if we are looking for critique, or just praise!
Sylvia and Alan make good points about commenting on WIP...what to say? Unless asked for I wouldn't presume to critique. Praise is no bad thing, if it's genuine. I wouldn't praise something I didn't like. I just find it fascinating to see work develop. When I look at AG's WIP, it makes me want to draw or paint...not like AG...but just DO something! That's why I like work in progress. Lew.
Those who are not used to analysing a painting may well be very reluctant to criticize someone's work. Those of us who have taught a bit in our time have no such hesitation, but I suspect we're in a minority. I haven't posted many WIPs, because normally (NOT always!) I know what to do to get myself out of a hole. But I do try to comment if people ask - and while I try not to be horribly judgmental, I will lay the crooked finger on bits that seem 'wrong', which word opens up a whole new can of wriggly worms: the aim is to help with observed problems, not to tell someone how to paint. And that balance isn't always easy to strike - so I can understand why people don't try to. The 'crit' that is the most fundamentally and wholly useless is of the kind you get with groups on Facebook - it just drives me up the wall (never a long journey..) when I see comments like 'lovely!'; 'beautiful!'; 'lovey colours' on a painting which is, by any objective or subjective assessment, just god-awful and an abomination which should never have been committed to canvas: but of course so many of these aren't really art groups, but mutual self-support groups: I wouldn't think of commenting on those, because they're mostly looking for pure encouragement rather than any serious advice. But here - it should be different. I'd never tear a person's work to pieces - but I'd hope to provide and receive honest advice/opinion. There's no point otherwise.
And of course, 'expert' opinion, granted any of us would claim that status anyway, can still be wrong.... miss the point; be biased; reverting to the Big Painting Challlenge, I did think one of the contestants, instead of feeling hurt and coming near to tears in receipt of one dollop of criticism, should just have smiled sweetly and muttered something very vulgar under his breath... One good reason why I should never be on that programme: it wouldn't have been under my breath. Judges will judge, critics will criticize, but we have no choice in the end other than to go our own way if we ever expect to get anywhere. It's not always easy to distinguish the good advice from the bad - but then, that's true well beyond the world of art.
Robert, why do you feel that comments like "beautiful" etc are wholly useless? I'm afraid I am guilty of doing this, but in my case I don't feel qualified to critique every work on the Gallery that appeals to me (nor do I have the time), but I do like to put an encouraging comment on paintings that particularly appeal. Also, very often others have made more knowledgeable comments, but I don't feel that letting someone know that another POL member likes their work is totally useless. Also there are works where everything seems to have come together, composition, colours, brushwork etc - a one-worder would seem to cover that. You have more knowledge of the finer points than some of the rest of us. I'd be interested to know others' opinions about this, as I'll now feel a bit uncomfortable leaving comments.
I was referring to comments on Facebook painting groups. I gave a hint when saying " is of the kind you get with groups on Facebook " ..... i.e. that's all they ever say, however good or bad the painting is in reality, because they're in many cases self-praising mutual support groups. Here, you get a variety and should expect it. You don't have to write an elegy every time you like a painting. But then, I didn't say you did........always read the small print.
