I like abstract work and do comment on it and have tried some myself of various types. My thoughts on abstraction are that it is complex in nature. It forces you out of the linear into seeing a world in an expanded and different form.
I think I've learned something from this thread - i.e. that i) you don't have to want to paint abstracts in order to appreciate them; ii) that thinking you probably ought to paint the occasional abstract is no good reason to do it, in itself; iii) that I do appreciate (some) abstracts, but that is no reason for me, at least, to seek to paint them.   Which is quite a relief, because on mature reflection - at my age, all my reflections are mature: or at any rate mouldy and cob-webbed - I just don't think I could paint a convincing, sincere, genuine abstract if you paid me in doubloons.  So - I shan't.
