Hi Mel havn't seen the latest and won't for a few weeks but I think The Artist Magazine assumes that the people who buy it don't need the how too...and that I agree with...I like to read about the artists they profile in detail...I save it and read bit by bit and have just finished one month when the next arrives.
Leisure Painter on the other hand does some great demos to paint along with
which I also enjoy and I think that is fine for that magazine...it's one of the reasons I buy it...it is always on the shelf and dosn't need to be ordered

I think there is a definite need to separate the content of the two magazines. I have always thought that Leisure Painter is for the beginner or Sunday painter while the Artist is more geared toward the semi professional or someone who already knows generally what s/he is doing. I mean no denigration in these two definitions, they both serve a useful function and cater to different needs.
I would like to see The Artist give us more in depth articles on painters both of the past and contemporary artists, focusing on working methods intentions etc rather than endless demos on how to paint Venice yet again. I know they do already, but all the artists featured seem to be chosen for their relevence to the amateur painter and very much in the domestic sphere. Wouldn't it be great to see articles on Martin Kippenburger, Jasper Johns, Jenny Saville for instance, someone who would rock the boat a bit, as a change from the cosy New English Art Club world / Mall Gallery world!

I would agree that the demo :How to start with Oil in the Artist Mag. would have been more appropriate in the Leisure Painters or Start art.
What I want to see is execution of a painting in Oil, Acrylic or Watercolour or other mediums with a twist or a trick or two, a different way to approach.
I must say that when the members talked on the forum about Joe Hush had a demo in acrylic in the Leisure Painters I wanted to know how he achieved this smooth sceneries.
I bought the mag and found out that he was working his demo on watercolour paper.
This is the kind of demo I would have liked in the Artist Magazine.

Apart from the Past Masters all of who have by now has been done to death, and much of what is written is repetitive mythology... I could not agree more.
But perhaps I should be tolerant and allow Artists painting after 1900 :-S
In depth I think should be the main driving force.
Modern ideas, anything goes imaginative ART.

Business advice, referring back to Mel.'s post, would be a good idea; International Artist ran a series a while ago, maybe they still do, I can't afford it... it dealt with interntional business with an American bent, though. And the advice was a bit obscure (reminded me of Ernest Marples, a millionaire and Tory minister, who wrote in the old Daily Mirror magazine decades ago: he tried to tell you how to make a million, but as he couldn't write, or explain things, or, I suspect, remember much, the advice was a little less than useful).
I imagine that readers of TA wouldn't be too keen to have page after page on marketing, setting up a website, etc but it wouldn't be a bad idea IF it went into depth. Just saying "get business cards, set up a website" would be a waste of space.
I wonder what others think, though: I can imagine that to some this would just be an distraction and not wanted in an arts magazine?

I subscibed to L.P for 4 years & became fed up with the repitition of articles ,same subjet different "teacher".I also tried The Artist ,but cancelled after 4 or 5 issues as I didn't see much difference in the two mags.
I had a present of a year of International Artist ,which was very interesting and a breath of freshair to see work of artists from all over the world.
I have now begun a year with Artist & Illustrator, which may be what some of you are looking for .I subscibed previously for 3 years & was very happy with the variety of articals.for those of you who can buy it off the shelf it is worth giving it a try. :->

Mel Subscribes to The Artist & Illustrator and The Artist...buys the International Artist from time to time...subscribes to some online art esoterica...etc.
I simply want information of what is new...and two reviewers
e.g. Acrylics by an Journalist Artist and an Artist who actually & regularly uses acrylics...[ & not me]
News...Events...Artistc styles...
Art as a business...
Features that are not the basic paint along with...follow my DVD...use my special brush....here is how to prepare canvas for painting...[if you want a mucky finish why not put the colour into the gesso? mix the black with the white..hardly rocket science is it?]
I want my magazines/journals to offer a challenge...some commercial stimulus and some intellectual stimulus.

As to Meltemi,s very first message at the start of the thread, "so would i". There was a thread about this a while back and i sugested roughly the same idea as to making an art programe for everyone who is interested in art coming from differant angles and not just one topic or as Meltemi said "not another how to" I think that has been done to death !and that,s why i suspect the big cheese,s of TV are not interested? We need something that is going to apeal to many and not just a few and Meltemi,s sugestion.s are spot on ! Surely once a week is not going to spoil there rating,s if they make it with an interest in mind for many who enjoy art in whatever shape or form? Or are we going to be bobarded with more reallity pro- and cooking " who can cook an omlete the quickest" WOW! I am total agreement with you on this one Mel. My son is on his last year in film making and has done a lot of directing, ??????? (lol) (lol) (lol) (lol) Harry.

I had in my possesion for a short while, some thirty odd year old copies of T A ..and in general content they were doing exactly the same things as now. Like gardening mags there are only so many ways to plant a bulb, lay a lawn or skin a cat, (last one not in gardening mag). Apart from new materials and contemporary artists it is inevitable that they are "samey" If you keep them long enough ,dont buy any new ones and just go back to the early ones all is fresh and new again. Something to do with getting older. Though I still look forward to mine being delivered every month.
