A new blue pigment sitting between cobalt and ultramarine blue has been launched with Golden and Kremer planning to produce paint. YInMn Blue https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/first-blue-pigment-discovered-200-years-finally-sale-180976769/ (hightlight and right click and open the link) I don't think this is advertising (see thread): no embedded link, Smithsonian a respected institution, pigment information correct.  Eternal vigilance, but I think mistaken in this case. Schmincke have started to manufacture it as a limited edition, along with genuine Lapis lazuli which I will definitely be buying and using primarily for glazing, Jackson’s are stocking both, but they aren’t cheap!

Some have told me they've tried genuine Lapis, but that it's not really a patch on the synthesized colour.  Which I hope is true, because I'm not shelling out the money asked for it!  YlnMn Blue - or whatever: they're really going to have to find a better name for it! - looks much more interesting, and is the first genuinely new blue on the market for very many years.  I'd like to try that.  (This post has by the way been reported as advertising, but I don't think it is - the link is to the Smithsonian, not a commercial organization; and the information about the pigment is correct.)
....and only $179 a tube!
Yers .... well, d'you know?, I think I might just put off buying it for now..............
Apropos of blue.....I'm in love with King's blue♥️.....as you can see I'm in a bit of a flippant mood and I've not yet had a G&T
I’ve just ordered both of these Schmincke blues from Jackson’s, £27.50 each for a 15ml tube, they’re pure pigment so you don’t need a lot, particularly when glazing. I’m looking forward to trying them out. Absolutely agree about the need to change the name of YinMn blue.
Oh my word a 179 dollars a tube, It must be pretty nice though. I would like to know why it is special. Obviously I just know about your bog standard range of colours.
Depends on the size Denise, my small tube was under £30 as I said earlier. It’s worth reading about Lapis lazuli and its use in historical paintings dating back centuries, you’ll find it interesting I’m sure. You’ll then understand why it’s so expensive!
I will have a look, thanks Alan.
I have just read how Vermeer applied it. I am amazed, I've saved the page. Oh, I really do have lot's to learn. I know he painted the girl with the pearl earring, everyone knows that. He really knew how to use that pigment. I will be reading about the history of his works all day tomorrow, I know I will. I know I am only an amateur but I need a small tube to experience it for myself.
Am sure as volume production gets going the price will drop down. Early days yet for a new pigment. As to the name, it is a bit of a tongue tier.  According to Wiki it's refered to Oregon blue sometimes due to it's creation in Oregon State University. I think I prefer the latter ! Will be interesting to try.
