As you know I tinker away like everyone else. The question that is always asked when painting or doing any type of work, is when is it finished? A dear artist friend, sadly no longer with us, frequently played devil's advocate and probed fellow artists with this question. Is there an answer? We were looking at a painting guide type of book once with all the different stages of a demonstration. He asked, why is that stage not the finished version, why not that one either?
No one finishes a painting. They just stop😆 I heard There was a time when painting was legislated in some countries. It was illegal to make a painting for someone without including an underpainting that would insure that the painting would not age badly. But paintings role has changed in our society since photography is what we use to document our collective and personal histories. So now a painting is done whenever the artist says it's done 😜 You could present an unopened tube of paint and say that it's finished. I wouldn't be surprised if this was already done.
A painting is finished when I can't do anything more to it without mucking it up. And if you don't know when that point is reached, you'll always muck 'em up. (I'm in a downright sort of mood today - must be the weather.)
I'm in the same frame of mind as Robert, thinking if I do more I will spoil it! As soon as I think it's finished, I sign it and that to me is the end of the painting and I never go back to 'titivate' it.
I'm a great 'titivater', unfortunately. Am still trying to cure myself.
When I'm bored with it, that can be anywhere from 15 minutes onwards.
