Lately I have noticed one or two new members to the Gallery using it as a platform to advertise their businesses. I'm not sure if this is permissible but I find it very off-putting if I want to comment on their paintings. Another thing that puts me off is if an artist refers to themselves in the third person in their biography. Does anyone else feel the same?
I do agree that this site should not be used for advertising and can only suggest that we do not respond to them. As for biogs in the third person I also agree that it comes across as a bit pompous as far as this site is concerned. However often Galleries want it that way and it an easy trap to fall into - just pasting in an existing biog. I have several in the third person which I use for various applications - must check that I've not fallen into the trap. Quick edit: I've just checked it out and I don't have one - perhaps I should pop one into my profile page. in fact I think I will.

I can understand professional galleries wanting that Michael, but I always regard this site as a little different in that we are not putting our paintings on to sell. To me it just feels as if the artist is not embracing the spirit of POL.
The Gallery should not be used as a zero-cost advertising hoarding and ads there should be deleted by the management without exception. If not, the gallery runs the risk of ending up like Fartbook and Twitter. I'm sure there are plenty of paid advertising options here. Maybe the Gallery should be actively moderated; your art and its supporting text all needing approval before becoming visible on the Gallery pages. I'd be happy with that. Biogs in the third person should be banned; you don't hear Therese May referring to herself as "The Prime Minister", or the Queen talking about "Her Majesty". Some people are just a long way up their own backsides.

Okay you've convinced me Alan - I'll not bother to add a biog - that's probably why I never put one on in the first place. I do know what you mean about being too far up their backsides - bit like some so-called celebs I could mention - so far up their face comes out of their mouth.
The trouble with celebs nowadays is that they don't have to do much to achieve their "dizzying" heights of stardom and then they can't stand the test of time because people realise they have no talent and that is where programmes like "I'm A Celebrity....." come in. Sorry got off the topic, but I do get a little het up at times!
On the Gallery, over which the mighty Dawn exercises control, there have been a few who have tried using it to promote themselves - I don't really mind that, in part because they'll soon discover it doesn't work; artists rarely buy from other artists. Yes, I've noticed that some have just cut and pasted their website blurb - and they rarely if ever respond to comments, you'll notice, because advertisement is what they're up to. I'd worry if there were many who did that, but while it's just a few - I just assume they haven't quite got the point. But I'll still comment on their work, if it takes me that way....
Just seen Marion Dutton's biog on one of her Gallery entries - it's an essay flogging her classes and has to be the worst, most blatant self-promotion I've ever seen (and I see a lot of guitarists sending round links to their YouTube channels telling everyone how wonderful they are). That's the sort of stuff that needs to be handled by paid advertising. Why not limit the Biog to 100 words/ 500 characters?
Yes, I did start commenting on Marion Dutton's work but quickly realised she was promoting herself. Yes, she's a very good artist but no better than other wonderful talent on here.
She was one of the artists' work I was going to comment on but felt that she wasn't really interested in our opinion just as long as she advertises her classes etc. Incidentally whilst I agree that artists don't normally buy from other artists, it doesn't stop non-members accessing the gallery in order to buy paintings so she and others like her may still benefit from the advertising.
In the big scheme of things . So what...?
As I don't sell my art, then that side of it makes no difference to me. I'm more concerned about artists just coming on POL's gallery to advertise and thus changing the dynamics of the site. In the art magazine Artists and Illustrators, they too have a free site, a bit like ours but if you want to advertise your paintings, you have to pay a small fee per annum and this keeps the two different elements separate.
