I've been missing stuff due to my not getting messaging right. I've been through the messaging instructions several times but would  just be grateful if one of the experts could confirm that I now understand how this works, and put me right if I'm still floundering.  I stopped getting email notifications of new works by artists I'm following back in June. I've been putting off following this up. Is this when the "new messaging service" came in? You can message someone through the POL messaging service but only if you are both following each other. I see that now I have added Paul/Dixie to artists I'm following, a link to message him comes up on all his forum posts that I'm reading. I think I might have missed his reply to something I asked on the forum because we weren't following each other at that time. I was of course looking in my emails when Paul said he had replied. When I open a new conversation there are only 3 people I can message. Presumably because we're the only ones following each other. To contact any of the rest of you I "email this artist" from the gallery. Link on any of their paintings. In messaging I'll still get notifications of new works by artists I'm following, comments on my works, and comments on any forum topics I've initiated or subscribed to - am I correct? If I need putting right on any of this, many thanks.

Hi Sandra, I *think* you have to select "send me email digest" in your communication preferences - to actually get *email* notifications.  I've switched mine off, so I can't be positive about this.
With Sarah, Phil, Ellen, Rose the dentist, and the granddaughter whose name I forget.

If you want to message someone, I think you first have to "follow" them.  Otherwise, I think you're right.  Sometimes notifications are useful; sometimes not.... I get a bit scratchy about them because I get far too many emails generally.

I don’t think you need to be following someone to message them , I’ve just tried a random choice in the gallery. Open one of there painting and scroll down to the bottom of the page a selection appears, one is message this artist, I’ve used that before to speak with someone about there work without following them . Either it’s just good luck that it’s worked or it actually works.

Paul, I’ve also used - without needing to follow someone - the ‘email this artist’ option which comes up when you click on an image in the gallery.  They then receive the message by email and can choose whether or not to reply (I guess depending on whether or not they want to pass on their email address).

Thank-you for your replies. Yes you can email someone from the link in the Gallery without following them, however the instructions for messaging from the Forum clearly state that this type of messaging can be done only if you are both following each other. When I go to open a new conversation in messaging the software brings up only three people I can message that way.  I don't know which method Paul used for his initial reply to me, but whichever one it was I didn't receive it. And still haven't (the initial reply that is. We've made contact via the messaging service since.) And it was following this up that made me read the instructions pretty carefully, several times.  Norette, I've now been through my preferences and selected everything! Just in case I miss something.
