p.s. Adele, who's the gorgeous wee chap in your photo?
pps - Have now found the thread on varnishing oil paintings so know Robert's opinion. Very interesting, especially as I had retouch varnish recommended to me. However I exhibit rarely and sell even more rarely so not a huge issue. Robert you really are a font of knowledge.
Thanks Sandra for your comments. The "wee chap" is my now 7 year old granddaughter Rosalie - she also has a three year old sister Zoe I have an order coming today with a few more paints and zest-it, so hopefully I can get on. I am due to go on holiday shortly but I am at present battling a virulent infection in my arm that is not responding to drugs so I have been told I will have to go into hospital for treatment tomorrow - hence there may be a break for you all from my "witterings". Yes Robert is very knowledgeable about oils and their mediums and I do take his varnishing advice seriously as I used to varnish my own oils at only 3 months with not very good results. The fibre art is also ongoing and I will be working on one of each as I go along, once my arm has healed of course.
Best wishes, Adele - hope the arm is sorted out swiftly so that you can enjoy your holiday and then get back to work on your oil paintings. Sandra - I'm not overly keen on spray varnishes, especially if you can't find a maker's name on the can. The varnish I use currently is Winsor and Newton's Artists' Gloss varnish, which is a ketone resin with white spirit, and so removable. There are many others about - and you can always follow the practice of John McCombs, up there in Yorkshire, and frame them under glass: I suspect he's very unusual in this, but it's another way of doing the same job.
Oh Adele, I'm so sorry you are under the weather, I hope your arm gets better quickly as it sounds very nasty. I'm sure the hospital will sort you out and you will soon be off on your hols. Good luck for tomorrow.
Thanks for the good wishes Robert and Margaret. I've got one week to get it sorted out!
Adele, have only just checked in and seen your post about the infection in your arm. I am so sorry, and do wish you a speedy recovery. Then best wishes for a good holiday so that you can enjoy your new paints when you come back. I'll be thinking of you and wishing you well. Thank-you for your advice Robert. I'll keep an eye out for the varnish you recommended. I'm pretty sure though that there will be a name somewhere on my current one, just couldn't find it in the evening with my rather wonky eyesight. I should get it out into better light and have a proper look.
Thank you for your kind wishes Sandra - hopefully a specialist may be able to treat me as an outpatient. Fingers crossed!
