Hmm. I've got a commission in acrylic that wasn't inspiring me (it didn't help that it takes a lot of setting up), so I started a little oil. I thought that I was covering the white up and sketching in, but the image coalesced really well and I'm a bit concerned about overworking it!
I used a colourshaper to apply the paint initially, then I dipped a brush in turpentine and swooshed the colour around a bit; finally I just had to add some white, and that was a job for a knife. With a bit of colour shaper surface-interference.
