I do agree ,the texture is awful.  Really sad as it's a lovely portrait.   I like Garstaeker  gessoed board ( probably spelled that wrongly) it has a wonderful smooth surface...

There's few surfaces out there, that support oil painting, and it's not easy task to decide which one is best for our needs, until we try it. I'm going for Claybord first, if I'm unhappy, I'll try something else then. I'm doing all I can to avoid priming my canvas. I did prime these two paper pieces, and I don't like it. Too much time consuming, and attention to sanding, then priming, then sanding ... The Claybord on the other hand is already extra smooth surface. All I need to do is oiling-out, and I'm going to stain it with preferable colour afterwards, then I'm free to begin the painting. Thank you Sylvia.
Hi, I use Belle Arti : Canvas Panel : Cotton : 3.2mm MDF  which someone recommended on this site and I haven't looked back.   A little pricey but it's the best I've come across after a lot of trial and error.  Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for recommendation Heather, I'll have a look. I used to love Belgian Linen canvas, they are priciest too, high grade linen, extra smooth, oil primed (Fredrix)etc. I don't know.., but the example I have is too coarse to my likeness, the harsh appearance may get disappear at later stages, but I'm not after to get this far. I'm done. Let see if I achieve what I want on clayboard first. Based on my life experience, I know I have to try it by myself, as everyone has different expectations, so the needs, and one thing could have be bad for one, but could be perfect for the other... Thank you Heather. Art.
It would almost certainly have been myself who recommended Belle Arti boards Heather, I use nothing else. They come in different grades of canvas or linen, the latter is probably my favourite albeit a touch expensive!
Alan Bickley on 03/11/2022 08:31:39
I used to paint on Fredrix Belgian Linen, and you right, latter is usually smoother, and more expensive. I've never heard of that BELLE ARTI, but thanks to you Heather and Alan - it might be worth to try! Thank you. Art.
Ampersand - I'm not sure I used their clayboard, it might have been a different surface, worked very well for an oil painting, gave me nightmarish difficulties with acrylic - think smearing - but I've only used their boards once or twice, and who's to say the problem lay with the board rather than with my technique..  If an idea just isn't working out, it's very tempting to lay all the blame on the surface, or even the paint, when the fault lies with oneself.   In short, I agree with Arthur - oil paint is expensive stuff, don't skimp on the surfaces you apply it to: it deserves the best, and can punish you if you use the worst.  Sometimes though - it IS us: just as there are some watercolour papers I can't get on with, and this is a common phenomenon, so there are surfaces which just don't work for us in oil or acrylic - e.g.

It's wise and kind comment Robert. Thank you. Maybe I shouldn't, but I'm spending a lot to get the best quality. Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe - you get what you paid for. Therefore I'm working extra hours, to get the item, I think is top quality. I'm not happy otherwise (lol). I remember other artist words, when he tried pastel drawing first... (Jason Morgan). He didn't like it, he couldn't do anything, and suddenly he didn't want to carry on. Jason had found out later, that it wasn't him at this point, but cheap paper he was practicing on. I do agree Robert, it's us sometimes, it also can be mediums fault... So I'm trying to use the best I can afford, as if something goes wrong - it's only me to blame for :) I did three paintings on Claybord in past, when I was practicing airbrushing. I'm still doubting myself, whether I did paint it or someone else did... I'm usually very harsh regarding my painting, I just don't think I can paint nicely. But those three airbrushed pieces are impressing me. Nor they super duper, no, but they're highly realistic, nearly photorealistic - I believe it's thanks to Claybord surface, that helped me to achieve it... If I can manage to match such realistic paintin with oils.., then it's nothing, but worth to try... Thank you Robert.

Dear friends - if you curious of how I'm doing regarding the Claybord thing... Please refer to the new post topic I've started yesterday - "Claybord experiment". I did suspend this portraiture for now, until I experiment on clayboard first... If Claybord will suit my expectation, I'll come back to finish my wife and niece portrait. If not, I'll try other surface, until I'm happy with. There's no point to force myself to carry on this portrait until it's finished - if I feel it doesn't work for me. Thank you for your kindness and keen support throughout. Art.

Hi dear friends, you might be wonder why I'm not posting any updates, why I'm keep quiet ... MY ACCOUNT WAS LOCKED OUT !? First I thought I did something wrong, breach the forum principles somehow, or else... So I got in touch by sending the message to our Admins, sending apologies and asking for letting me know the issue I did to avoid it happens in future... After few days I did receive reply, that everything is alright, and there's no issue I did cause, and I should have login without any problem, as from the forum side, everything looks alright... This morning I was still locked out - so weird! But I'm having similar issue on the other forum, where occasionally my IP address is recognised as being on black list, but in few days I can login to that forum without any trouble? Admin of the other forum can not see any issue, and he can't fix it for me, because again - the issue seems to not exist, so there's nothing to fix... If the same trouble will affect me in here, then I can only apologise in advance for not replying to your messages on time...

When a user tries to log into their account and writes the wrong password several times in a row, they get temporarily locked out of their account for a period of time. This is a security measure aimed at making sure that their account is not being hacked by someone who just tries random passwords in hopes of finding the right one. It's an automatic thing coded into the site. It's not a manual thing done by the moderators or admins.
I was also locked out earlier this week. I contacted Dawn of the admin team, and was told that I was probably caught up in some Forum spam, and the problem was sorted out very quickly. I have had to sign in numerous times since, but can live with that.  I am set up on the log in page so that I don’t need to remember my password, thankfully it enters automatically, but it’s a pain to have to log in many times in a day, and if that continues I will contact Dawn again.

Thanks for keen advice Lucian, but I'm still thinking my case was different, it's because I didn't do multiple attempts to login. The first day I did one attempt only, and seeing I'm locked up, I did try next day again, just once. It was same. The third day I did send a message to admins to report the issue I'm having, and I thought they did block me off, because maybe I did breach any rules as a new member out of conscious? They couldn't see any error as you know. And suddenly I could login again without problem, just after 11 or 12 days... Nobody knows why it's happened, but I'm assuring you, I didn't cause it by incorrectly tapped password for multiple times. Thank you Lucian for your kind attention to my trouble.

Same in here dear Tessa, my password is saved in the browser, so I don't repeat typing it every single time, so there's no risk of typing mistake involved... I did wait few days for admins response, but it could be because of weekend. Anyway Jane did her best to help me out, but she couldn't see any error, so she was unable to fix it. Lately she has passed my issue to other team to step in, but then I've managed to login again - after around 12 days - in my case... I'm hoping it won't happen ever again, and I wish you the same. It's very upsetting not being able to respond to the post written by friends, nor do anything really. Thank you for share. Art.
Don't know that I've entirely grasped the issue here, but from time to time we all have to log-in again - my details are saved in Chrome, so that's very easy to do.   If you're having to do it several times a day, though - maybe change your browser?  Chrome has worked well for me in this and other ways. By the way, are you aware that your new avatar has a certain resemblance to Fagin, of Oliver Twist fame?  A man much misunderstood, I always thought: the lads he looked after were probably a lot better off with him than they would have been in the Parish Workhouse....
Nah....it doesn't Robert, Fagin was gray with long  oily locks , a long thin nose and a malevolent expression. Most of his boys were probably hung at a later date...sorry Pog we are talking about you...think your pic is coming along well.  Bill Sikes maybe ?

Fagin was young once, you know.   It's the beard and the hat as does it....
