Rather encouraging to read that, because not everyone takes criticism well; most do, but now and then one gets the impression that the idea was to show off rather than invite comment. Still, one carries on - I'm not that fond of criticism myself, so I can understand it when people take it amiss; and of course - one can be totally wrong.... Or just misunderstand what the artist was trying to do. The risk you take, though, when putting your work on a public forum is that it will be criticized, and sometimes the critic will be - a nit. I can think of one or two, but you mustn't press me for examples, because I'd speedily give them to you and upset everyone.......

Yes, I recognize that experience.... I don't think it's right or appropriate to dismiss anyone's painting on the grounds you describe. And yet, and yet ... there IS a difference between honest paintings, whose meaning and intention might be misunderstood, and paintings which are just poorly executed. Normally - I don't mind a tiny bit if fairly primitive paintings are posted; they're honestly shown, and they invite honest assessment - and that's fine. God knows, we all know what we were like when we started. <div>
</div><div>But today - or the last few days - there has been a plethora of postings that are just, I'm afraid, poor: it's not a question of interpretation, they're just not very good. Again, I don't care about that at all - post them and ask for opinions; or don't.... who cares? But a dozen at once...? Just too many - and (let us be honest here) it makes this site look like an amateur show. </div><div>
</div><div>All right, we've been here before and it's caused controversy: but no one minds, or should mind, a couple of very amateur postings: how else are people to learn? A whole page of the blessed things is another matter entirely.... </div>

It's true with some of the gallery postings not being up to the standard many people post on here. But as it has been said we all have to start somewhere though and we learn through our mistakes, experience and criticism from fellow artists.
We need to encourage those who have just started out with this very rewarding hobby or profession of ours and to give them every support they need to point them in the right direction.
However I also agree that a limit of possibly three gallery postings per day should be set, even though when I joined here a couple of months ago I did put a few more on than this in order to place some of my work within my personal gallery folders, shussh, don't tell anyone. *-)
I like to receive criticism be it good, bad or simply constructive, it helps with any further work I do plus gives you a buzz and encouragement.

Firstly, Hi..I am new to Painters online as my hubbie kindly paid for a subscription to the magazine as a Christmas present.....
Re criticism....unless people ask for it, I think it can be very hurtful to get comments on your work. We each like different things and art is a personal thing. I might like something that someone else hates and people might hate mine while I love what I have done. There are a lot of painters who paint as a therapy and to criticise them could destroy them. This isn't me, but I know some people who find painting has helped heal various problems that they have.
I have only taken up watercolour painting in the last two years and paint aceos which are tiny (miniature paintings). Because they are quick to paint I often do 5 or 6 a day and therefore might do a lot of listings....I just love to show my work and that isn't showing off because I have a lot to learn still.....and my learning will probably never stop.....always something new......As a pensioner I just love to paint and look at other people's work and I personally don't mind how many pics artists put in the gallery. It is by looking in the gallery that I get inspiration as there are no art clubs near to me. Thanks also to magazines which help me in my learning curve.

thank you for the welcome......I have just posted another painting to the gallery...called above the clouds.....I tend to splatter paint on the paper and then see what I can make of it. I never plan what I am going to do and I never draw first....to me painting is fun and full of new experiements.....For years all I could do was draw and so I have had to learn from books and dvds.......
I had a strict upbringing and it wasn't until I started painting that I realised that I was allowed to break the rules...so now I am a painting rebel.....lol
Happy New Year
