Display these better drawings or draw my attention to them - leaving aside the fact that this one was accomplished in biro, which is not the most friendly or attractive of tools, nor does it last too well, the quality of this one lies in its negative spaces and what it has left out. There were other highly accomplished drawings on the Gallery today, but in my opinion this was the best of them. However, one is open, as always, to argument......

Sorry Robert but I'm with Margaret on this one. Actually I prefer his earlier posting, also done in biro, titled Vestal Virgin. However if I were to chose a favourite posting today it would be Timothy Holmes who can do no wrong for me. I guess it's all down to personal preference.

I have just made a comment, and yes, I rather like it, it demonstrates good drawing ability although I wouldn't want to elaborate on that statement after viewing just the one piece. I also agree with Michael regarding Timothy, always consistently brilliant in all his portraits. Felicity Flutter, too photographic for my taste but obviously a great talent in what she does. I have just spotted her pencil sketch which I do like.

Yes, it's a fine drawing. I'm not sure about 'epitome.' I like James Hair's 'character drawn on a bus', a rapid, very loose sketch of an old man. People drawn in these circumstances are hard to do, they don't sit still like a tree. Yet James has captured character. Great skill of course, but if you look at their working practices they can seem somewhat mechanical. The praise heaped on this kind of art is often along the lines of '...so real you'll think it's a photograph.' It that's the aim, part of me wonders 'why bother?' You can have a high degree of realism without the result looking like a photograph. I like paintings and drawings to look like paintings and drawings. I guess they do it for the same reason that we all do it...because they like it. All opinion, of course. Art would be a pretty sterile affair if we all like the same thing.

It's just great that everyone can look at the same thing and think so differently. That's life. I agree with Sylvia about Felicity Flutter (great name) I like her work too.

Should have also said I really like Carol Swingler, her drawings of plants and flowers are superb.
