Hi all, I'm trying to find the details of an artist. I managed to take a photograph of the piece that I am hoping to buy. I photographed the piece in Grasmere (Lake District) in 2013. Unfortunately at the time I wasn't able to purchase the piece, but now wish to buy it as a wedding present for my future wife. I have contacted the various galleries in Grasmere and no one has any recollection of the piece. If anyone recognises it or has any suggestions as to where I might get more information, please let me know. I believe the painting is oils on canvas/board, mounted in a wooden frame and was around £300-400 from memory.
It is a strange painting and it looks as if it was cut from a larger painting as sometimes happens when the original painting is damaged. This could explain the absence of a signature. Sorry I cant help otherwise than to urge you to get more information from the vendor before any purchase.

The very annoying thing is that it looks familiar - I've a feeling I've seen it before.... sadly, I have less than no idea where. If I concentrate hard, I'm only going to drive it further away - but there's a particular technique at work here... blowed if I can think what it is. Sorry, this waffling isn't helpful, but I'll keep my eye open. If you have a Facebook account, you might get better luck there. I suspect by the way that the way it's presented was a compositional decision. for good or ill, rather than cropping, but Syd may be right (kind of me that, Syd, eh?). Of course, if it's been sold it won't help you much even if you can find it. There's no shortage of artists here who could paint you something similar, obviously not copying it, if you need to get this gift in a reasonable period of time. Only I anticipate you might have rather a long search, trying to track down an individual painting you last saw in a gallery in Grasmere three years ago. http://www.isleofwightlandscapes.net http://www.wightpaint.blogspot.co.uk
Almost impossible to track down, you have to forget it and move on. As Robert has said, there are plenty of artist's that can paint animals to at least that standard, that is your only way forward.
Its an odd painting personally I don't like it. What I have just looked at on Google is Oil painting of Elephants trunk. then I looked under images. that might either find you this or something similar. again long shot.
Hello one and all, I'm hoping you can help me. I am trying to locate the artist, year and name of this painting which I took (not a very good) picture of when I visited the La Piscine Art Museum in France 3 years ago. I have tried to contact the museum for help but I haven't had a response so I thought I would try this option. There is a grainy looking artist name which I am unable to make out on about half way down the page on the right hand side of the picture. Any assistance you could provide in helping me to track this picture down would be greatly appreciated. Once found, I am hoping to locate a copy of it somewhere for my girlfriends birthday present in October. Thanks again. Paul
Many of us have replied to your request and probably given you everything we have. To repeat myself this is not an exceptional painting of an elephant and will be almost impossible to give you the artist's name, my advise as before is to move on, look at some David Shepherd prints of elephants, they are far more interesting and colourful and in their natural environment.
I'm confused - I can't see the connection between this poster and the previous one..... Same sort of request, but surely different person/paintings? However, this doesn't make a lot of practical difference because the upshot's the same - I tried to take a look at the painting, but it requires me to download it, which indeed I did. One view of the painting - should there have been more? Not a particularly great shot, although if I'd known the painter it would have been adequate; no indication of the signature. In short - you're not giving us a lot of help here: almost anyone could have painted this; I couldn't even estimate a date from this view - other than to say it's probably older than I am, and maybe even as old as Syd! Which isn't a lot of help.... Generally speaking, we're not that brilliant at this sort of thing - we can't be, because we're not seeing the painting itself, just a photo which tells us almost nothing; there have been tens of thousands of artists all over the world, and unless your painting is a very remarkable example by a very well-known painter, it really is needle in a haystack territory. The back of this picture might tell you more than the front - I'd be curious to see that, because (unlike the others) I've sold antiques and a few old pictures in my time. But you'll be very lucky to get an attribution for your painting I'm afraid - from your photograph, it has an elaborate and expensive frame, but I just can't see the work well enough to be able to tell anything about it beyond that.
PS -- but I do like the painting: buy it.
Same painting Robert, of that I am certain, perhaps this guy has changed his name, there can't be two requests for info on this elephant. Anyway, I will leave it at that, I don't like it and it probably is a scam as Syd has said.
The second painting isn't of an elephant - it's a portrait.......... This one, to be exact. I'd never have suggested buying the elephant painting...

Okay, I get it now, this new chap has posted on this old 'elephant' thread, not the best thing to do but let's proceed. Yes, this one looks well painted from what I can see, not my style and I don't like the pose but that's just me, can't help any further mind you.
