Following on from my last visit to a gallery here is my favourite work currently on show at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. It's by William Mulready and is a beautiful pen study. The writing says "Killed by cold, Feb 13 1849" Apart from a full wall of amazing pen studies by Mulready there's a room dedicated to watercolour with works by Turner, Girtin, Blake. After the watercolours there is a good room full of portraits, in here there's a lot of amazing portraits with the highlight (possibly) being a Freud self portrait as well as work by Bacon and Durer & Picasso. There is a lot of pencil work in this room which is what I needed to see with how I'm feeling at the moment. Upstairs didn't really do it for me. It's theme is the 1960s and has a room dedicated to Sarah Lucas, she has a "delicate artwork" on show which is basically a fridge freezer with a toilet on top.... Downstairs was better, if you can find it, there's a little room tucked away and you will find some cloud studies by constable as well as a lowry. All in all worth a visit, try and go after the 1st of July as one of the rooms that was shut is open again for contemporary Chinese art. The Whitworth itself has just been refurbished and the new rooms have a light airy feel. Oh and just a quick edit: If you go have a good look at the watercolours by Thomas Girtin. He died young and I think it was Turner who said "If poor Girtin had lived then I would have starved"

We are planning a trip to the Whitworth my Urban Sketchers group. So thankyou for you walk around and insight
If I may be permitted to totally deviate from painting for a moment, anyone visiting the Whitworth who likes oriental cooking (or even things like garlic in quantity at a knock-down price) will find an excellent Chinese supermarket/ wholesaler nearby: WH Lung in Upper Brook Street. It's an absolute must for me every time we visit my mother-in-law in Manchester (and so handy for the Whitworth!)
