Welcome to this weekend’s bonus artist thread , my choice of artist this week was inspired by a birthday gift of book of he artist work. Pierre Joseph Redoute 1759 - 1840, was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands, known for his watercolours of roses , lilies and other flowers a the Chateau de Malmaison , many of which were published as large coloured stipple prints. He was nicknamed “ the Raphael of flowers “ and has Ben called te greatest botanical illustrator of all time. Redoute was an official court artist to Marie Antoinette and continue painting throughout the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. Information from Wikipedia, more available. I hope you enjoy my selection of his work.
I am out all day tomorrow but will catch up with the thread tomorrow evening, might get a quick look first thing in the morning.
Incredible work Paul…thanks
Beautiful work, there’s a huge selection of his prints available from the RHS website.
I set myself a challenge a couple of weeks ago, to paint in our group, a vase of flowers from the Dutch Golden age, much like your last one Paul. I gave up, they are so much more difficult than you'd think.  I'll perhaps get that book, and start on the simpler examples.

I just love the lilac. I have done a lot of botanical pictures in my past ( before the whimsy set in), and they are really not easy. These are just beautiful. Also historically it's interesting to see how plants have developed since Georgian times. Roses especially. Nice choice.
I pleased his work had been well received, a couple more. Norrette the book is really worth buying, so many beautiful paintings , quite over whelming . I have a similar book thst I will look out and add the title incase you want to have a look at a different one, again full of illustrations.

Worth remembering here that he painted - I presume these are all Redouté's work -  with the pigments available to him at the time; which would have been very much fewer than those we have today (though some he had aren't now available: some, but not many).  So when you see a vast range of pigments from a manufacturer, just stop and have a think!  They may be very exciting - and very costly - but do you really need most of them?  Just a little thought, out of my little brain ....   What we do need are high quality pigments that are well made: these paintings could all have been made with 10 to 12 colours at most: if you knew what you were doing, of course.  The genius lies in the composition, the observation, the obedience of the hand to the eye.  So there you are, crack all of that and you've got it made!
