Love these two paintings , the second one is my favourite of all the ones I’ve seen.
Sorry I’m posting this a bit later than planned, I’ve cut and pasted it from the internet.
Another good choice Dixie and a very fine artist. His landscape distance work is especially good, not so keen on the building.
Not overly to my taste, but a really good landscape painter.
He is an artist very much of his time , both landscapes and cityscapes were very popular and artists were able to make a living.
He's an artist of my time as well (in terms of appreciation: not date...); the figures in one of the landscapes apart, which I find domesticates them a bit, though I understand that this was popular in his day.  Comparisons are odious, of course - but well, I've always been pretty odious, so I'll say I much prefer his work to that of the previous artist, just because it took far more skill to produce it.  But that is, I readily admit, a practitioner's point of view rather than that of an art collector, critic, or whatever.  We should all be able to enjoy the last one shown, though, I hope.
I think pieces 5 and 6 could pass as contemporary paintings if figures hadn't been included.
A few more to keep this alive.
The more you look at his work the more you notice how good his landscapes are, despite the addition of figures in some of the albeit the accepted at the time , I’m not letting that spoil the rest of his work.
Next weeks artists are : Robert Tavener and Peter Butler , Jenny will set up the thread as I’m currently away , having my first break in five years,he se no bonus artist this weekend.
Enjoy your break Paul
Yes Paul - take some time for yourself - luxuriate in restful freedom from toil! Back to the artist: the painting 6 from the bottom really does it for me.  I think what he gets is volume - the shapes, the reality and stability of the land; in the painting to which I refer, sans figures I notice, the tree is perfectly painted; I'd like that on my wall.
