Love figure drawings. LURID...CATASTROPHIC...LOW BROW are some of the tags applied to Walter Molino's work. He was an Italian Illustrator from the 1950s-1970s from the era of illustrated magazines when artists were used for the illustrations rather than photos. He was immensely popular chiefly in Italy and France, famed for his illustrations of catastrophes among other things. Odd that disaster should be so popular, perhaps seeing such work and knowing it was a figment of someone's imagination allowed viewers a vicarious pleasure as they supped their coffee while reading the latest magazine.
It was his drawings that first attracted me to him...
Loose with a cartoon edge, great gestural figure work.
Now for some disasters to cheer you all up...
He illustrated numerous women's magazines, and his pictures of women sorting out men were very popular...
Many of his 'normal' pictures featured the movie stars of the day. Here, La LOREN serves pizzas.
Well, I think I've successfully lowered the tone, but the fact is many of these illustrator's figure work was exceptional even if featured in 'low brow' magazines.
I like all of Paul's choices...great work. I admire EL GRECO also. Which doesn't stop me admiring Molino's work too.

There are two figure paintings whose images have haunted me since I first saw them in the 1970's.
The first is John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew of Lochnaw which is in the collection the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
The second is Giovanni Boldini's portrait of Madame Charles Max, which I have to admit reminds me of a lady I once knew. It is in the collection of the Musée D'Orsay in Paris, though I saw it in the 1979/1980 Post Impressionist exhibition at the Royal Academy. Sadly it was not on display when I visited the Musée D'Orsay in 2024 - not that I realised it at the time as there were way too many other masterpieces to blow my mind away.

Para Jamparsi - a portrait study capturing vulnerability, age, and human emotion... I wouldn't hang it on my wall but it's a great painting.
Jenifer Anderson - Scottish artist - beautifully painted piece
