Interesting thoughts here. Is art a state of mentality? A mental state.
I think the painting of boats is probably Island Bay, Wellington, with the island in the background.

Do you mean as opposed to something like a commissioned work that is largely craft and catering to a client? The artist serves the client instead of their own impulses.
Yes you can say that I would say. We have art departments that deal with graphic design, animation, advertising and so on. What we would call the normal things. Then there is those that step outside of that normal into fine art as it is called. It all depends on the way the individual wants to go I guess. That’s just my view of the field.

Just thought I’d bring this thread back on track again - seems to have gone off at a bit of a tangent!  Sandra, I do like this artist’s style, especially the painting of the boats.

Intersecting tangents - once you get an introduction to a rabbit hole, you can trust some of us to head straight down it, in blissful ignorance of whatever kicked it off.  Perhaps the bit about states of mind should have formed a new thread entirely; but when you see a question or point heading the page one's looking at - it's all too easy to ignore what went before and to comment on it.  Particularly if one - doesn't actually look; as I didn't.... I think I'll remove my bit, and  maybe start a new thread; or not - because it's going to look just as oddly out of place...
Robert best to leave at this point and if the discussion continues open a different thread , I was out earlier was out would have suggested that.
Great minds think alike, eventually; I've cut the post and pasted in a new one.

Thank-you for your positive comment Jenny. I like the rather abstract style of some of her paintings (some better than others).
I had a good look at her artwork available on line and came across these , some were dated in the mid 1939s , I prefer these to her more modern ones.
I like these a lot more and I’ve never seen them before.
