He had what the cognoscenti call "a lively line" in his sketches and figure paintings; but the one shown last but one - I think it reads "for Dolores", or something similar - is not convincing; the line of the jaw, and the way the index finger lies against the face, don't look like the work of a competent portraitist. Of course, it may be an early work?

I've had a look online - that painting was attributed to Becker in one exhibition, but has also been attributed to an Australian artist named Patterson; a more likely attribution I would have thought, since while I wouldn't go so far as to call it "awful", I wouldn't stray too far from that word either. As for the lower painting - not convinced, but at least it's well painted.

Bit of further investigation - the lowest of the pictures isn't a Becker either; it's a painting by Wm. Duckworth Greenham - or so we're told. It certainly doesn't bear any resemblance to anything Becker ever painted. Quite the journey of discovery.....
PS - the Patterson painting is actually signed by Patterson.
