PETER ADDERLEY, born 1965, is a contemporary British artist known for his whimsical Naïve style paintings depicting rural and coastal scenes. He grew up in Staffordshire and studied at the polytechnic there before earning his degree at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. After graduating he freelanced as an artist and card designer, but in 1990 decided to concentrate full-time on painting as a professional artist.
Now based in North Devon, he works from his home studios overlooking the harbour town of Ilfracombe, and finds living near the sea a great source of inspiration for his work. He has two studios because he likes to separate his thinking/developing space from his painting space. “Space for thinking is very important, it’s where I get my best ideas.”
He paints on board and often starts his painting process with enamels which he likes, especially for painting the sea, as they have an unpredictability about them. Once these are cured the painting process is finished with heavy body acrylics. His paintings are sold in various galleries, and many of them are reproduced as greetings cards.
