Michael Cheval. Russian Artist, born in 1966.
Michael showed a passion for art as a child, in his early days he moved with his family about Russia and Europe, along the way studying Fine Art at Russian Academies. He had success as his art career blossomed, but his major impact came when he emigrated to America in 1997. He's very prolific. He paints primarily in oils. His work is collected in America and Europe, and his art hangs in major galleries. He's a surrealist, but prefers to think of himself as an absurdist. Michael says surrealism mainly stems from dreams and the sub-conscious, whereas his is straight from his imagination where he employs an inversion of logic.
I discovered his art some years back. This is the first example I found of his work...
...it remains one of my favourites. Imaginative, well painted, and fun. Who wouldn't like to take a bike ride up in the clouds?
Some more of his work...
He paints portraits too, often with a surreal edge...
In the above double portrait, he's given his subjects a Vermeer style setting.
He's also painted a few music album covers...
I admire many forms of art. My main interests are the great cartoonists, illustration, paintings of people, and art with an off-beat touch. So I'm going to like this artist.

Yes he uses oils, Robert. Apparently he writes lengthy descriptions/stories about all his paintings. I didn’t want to do that for each painting, but was going to mention it later. It verges on art babble to me, but as it’s the artist himself doing it I suppose that’s his privilege. I find the girl riding her bike in the clouds a charming picture without the description.

As well as imagining stories for each of his paintings, he's also inspired by music. So many of his works contain musical instruments, often very weird ones that he's imagined.
Some of his drawings...
A portrait...
A self-portrait with his daughter. This time with fancy dress but no surreal background...
Some of his influences...
The artist...

He also decorates guitars...
