I looked at this artist's work yesterday and had mixed feelings about it. He's painted the everyday lives of ordinary people, this is subject matter I normally enjoy. I suspect it's because it's painted fairly loosely. Being totally unable to paint this way myself, it never-the-less often appeals...but not in this case.
Having another look today my view has shifted a little, and I find I do like some of the work. For example, the girl in red seated in a cafe, and the first of Denise's selections above...the loose sketch of a young woman which I find delightful. I'll look at more of his work later. This just confirms what I already knew, sometimes your appreciation of art often depends on your mood.

Lew I couldn’t agree more, I’m definitely one who’s mood affects what I enjoy art wise . Denise you have selected some really good examples of his work . I’m having mixed feelings about his work, I think it’s because some I like and others I’m not sure about for some reason. He could be one of those artists that grow on you given time and looking at his art more .

I have mixed feelings too, though he does seem to be an artist who had an evolving style. The examples I have chosen are clearly very strongly influenced by the impressionists, so much so that I wonder if he took elements of their work and styles and fused them into paintings of his own. What might critics of today have to say about plagiarism and originality?

I like your two choices Tony, as you say, the impressionist influence is plain to see. Your point about plagiarism and originality is well made. I have mixed feelings about that too. Like you I love to look at art, the work that appeals lifts your spirits. The other part of me, the part that draws stuff, is looking for what can help me with my pictures. That part HOPES to be influenced by the good art I see. Sometimes I can’t tell the impressionists apart, some of the Monet and Renoir landscapes for example. One could wonder who did it first and who was influenced. Is anything original? One hopes so, but…

Another selection that makes me wonder about his relationship with the impressionists - unless I am just getting fixated and seeing things that aren't there. In Paul's latest selection the brushwork in No 4, the boats, puts me in mind of the looser works of Degas or Manet (can't decide which). Yet the very different brushwork in No 5 and No 6 puts me in mind of Renoir. The pose of the lady in NO 5, sitting on the red cushion, also shouts Renoir at me.
