Welcome to this weeks thread the featuring artists this week are : Marianne North and Naomi Tydeman . Tessa will open the week with her introduction to Marianne North  on Wednesday I will introduce the artwork of Naomi Tydeman  Enjoy your week and most importantly enjoy your art .

Nice choice, Tessa. A pioneer of her time. Not many ladies travelled alone as she did, and went to some isolated places around the world. Look forward to your introduction.

I have visited the gallery at Kew Gardens where her paintings are displayed. It’s amazing a total hit of dazzling colours and detailed artwork every bit of the wall was covered, really to much to take in even after three visits I’d not really seen all .  And of course as your seeing the real painting it overwhelms you with the amount of work she did , amazing lady in amazing times , looking forward to seeing her work Tessa .

Marianne North 1830-1890. Marianne was born into a well off family and in her teens she had travelled extensively throughout Europe with her sister and father until his death in 1869. She was encouraged in her interest in both plants and painting. Having looked after her father until his death, she decided to travel alone and further afield , and eventually visited seventeen countries on six continents during a period of fourteen years. Her father had been a politician and she therefore had letters of introduction to various ambassadors, ministers, viceroys and rajah, although she actually preferred to make her own way.  In 1878-9 she travelled around India, producing 200 paintings.  In 1881 she visited Charles Darwin to whom she showed her Australian paintings and he wrote after saying how impressed he was at her flower and plant work. There is a Marianne North Gallery at Kew Gardens showing 800 of her paintings which are vibrant and colourful.  Here are a few. And one of the intrepid lady herself in situ!  I hope you like her work and story.

I decided to show some photos of the Gallery at Kew and selected some of her landscape . Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area plus the lovely grounds to look around.

Thanks Dixie. I wanted to show a link to the gallery at Kew but wasn’t sure how to do it. Also there is a piece of film on YouTube about her. Those are superb landscapes you have chosen.

She died far too young if those dates are right - but packed a huge amount of very fine work into the years in which she was active.

More astonishing artwork.  I was very taken by the Kew garden gallery pictures...must make a point of visiting that sometime.

Lew I think you would love the gallery, not an inch to spare . It can be a little bit too much on the eyes as you don’t know where to look , I was looking at one and my eyes drifted over to another. I enjoyed Kew but the gallery was the best bit for me so a few months later I returned just to do the gallery for the day .
