One of my favourite artists, he’s so versatile. Wonderful portraits, the capturing of light, the beautiful brushstrokes….and as a war artist too. Had tickets recently for his exhibition in London but had to cancel because I injured my back laying paving stones!! But I saw the exhibition at the cinema - excellent.
Which to choose? There are so many….
I know the name well, but wasn’t familiar with much of his work.  My favourite, shown again below, with his sketches of the two young girls in the painting, is ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’.  Such a beautiful painting.

A superb artist.  My favourite, which I've seen for real many times is the Carnation, Lily picture shown both by Hilary and Jenny (above).  A gem of a painting.
They are a bit special.thanks
I love his work, oils and watercolours. He was a pure genius. There would be so many of his paintings I could choose but I'm always in awe of Fumee d'Ambre Gris. Just look at the tonal quality. Unbelievable. The painting is magical. From his North African travels.
Wonderful artist
He was indeed an amazing artist. Here are a few more that I like. His painting of light was really special and I like the variety of his subject matter.
Having spent time removing the spam I can now get to something worthwhile. Some of his war artists work.

Apologies for jumping the gun by a few hours posting my choice of artist of the week but I know I won't have the opportunity later in the day. I first became aware of the artist Amy Sillman (wikipedia) when a painter friend introduced me to 'Faux Pas', a book of her writings and drawings. Much of what she said really chimed with my own thoughts about abstraction. Whether you're into abstraction or not, if you're interested in hearing a coherent set of views from a quirk and erudite presenter on drawing and colour from a non-traditional angle, I really recommend listening and watching some of her interviews, podcasts and talks that I list below. As a taster I'm just going to include a couple I admire to illustrate what I see as some of the characteristics of her approach, viz. gestural use of line, variations in line 'weight', dominance of blacks, greys and white zones, with slabs of color and both large and small scale features, all assembled into an intriguing collection of shapes, but a good place to view more examples is the website for one of her 2024 exhibitions Other resources: Studio Visit Article in Art News Youtube talk called "To Abstract" An interview for the excellent 'A Brush With...' podcast that some of you might already know (also available on the usual podcast channels -- I use Spotify) A longer talk on drawing called "Drawing in the Continuous Present:" Finally, a talk on colour, 'Color as Material' which includes some fascinating eclectic material on pigments and many other aspects that I hope will appeal to painters regardless of genre. A few examples to follow.
