She takes full advantage of the light effects on faces - lit from the side, or above, she imbues her subjects with life. There was a fashion some years ago for very flat portraits - one is on show at the just re-opened National Portrait Gallery; Jonathan Jones, one of the Guardian's art correspondents, is full of praise for it, while managing - just to be contentious, I imagine - to describe Joshua Reynolds as a "carboard cut-out painter".
Well, it's a mug's game to criticize a painting when you can only see a photograph of it - it's a portrait of Anne Wintour, by Alex Katz. Anyway, it seems to be very flat - contrasting lighting has not been used to any extent that I could see from the NPG photograph. I shall not presume to criticize it, but I do like a portrait with texture, light and shade, and Sally Ward offers that.

Sally Ward...a very accomplished portraitist. I like the way you can see where she's placed each brushstroke.
Interesting asides on the 'flat' paintings of Alex Katz. I often admire this style of art, and looked him up. A little underwhelmed. I've seen it done better...by artist/illustrator Patrick Nagel for example. But we all like different things. As for critics...open season.

Dixie - I haven't really thought this through, and there may be technical issues; but if you don't want to wait until Tuesday (and assuming the glitch will be an easy-fix anyway - it might actually take longer) if you were able to email your images and text to me, I might be able to do this for you. That always assumes my desktop pc holds out, of course! You never know with these things.
