Welcome to this weeks inspiration from Artists the two featuring artists are : Gregory Kurasov and Anna Toms. Lew will start the week off with his introduction to Gregory Kurasov and on Wednesday Robert will introduce Anna Toms who I believe he has contacted and she has given him permission to use her artwork. Have a good week and enjoy the artwork on display but remember to do some yourself.

Anne Toms, Paul - Alan Owen is another artist altogether: I shall be happy to do either of them!
I shall reserve Wednesday for Anne, and if I can smuggle Alan in too, I'll do so. I'm sorry I've confused you by putting things off, but that's down to my occasional mental health issues, which got just a bit difficult after New Year's eve: too many things happened at once, including the death of my former secretary at the age of 100: lovely lady, whose funeral I'll be attending in the coming week. Really surprising how these things upset us, but - well, they do. Not to worry, I've got a lot of pictures from Anne, including one of her very early paintings which she doesn't know I've got - hoping it doesn't come as a shock...

Thank you Robert if you do Anna on Wednesday that would be excellent, we can add Alan Owen ar another time .
Sorry to hear about the loss of your former secretary Robert , we do feel the loss of people who we have worked with and have been part of our daily life. Do look after yourself , I think we become more vulnerable to depression etc as we get older .
I’m looking forward to your introduction to Anna’s work .

GEORGY KURASOV - RUSSIAN ARTIST - BORN 1958
Georgy was born in Leningrad, now named St Petersburg. He has lived there all his life. At the age of 13, his mother enrolled him at an art school that was an offshoot of the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. His tutors said he had little understanding of colour, and transferred him to the sculpture section. Georgy said he found the painters they were required to study were boring, never-the-less he said his time at the art school was one of the happiest times of his life. Soon after completing his studies he was called up for the mandatory military service that was required in Russia. That over he was ready to start his life as an artist.
It was a difficult time for an aspiring artist, especially a sculptor. The Soviet Union was collapsing, times were hard and people had little money to buy art. Georgy switched from Sculpture to Painting. His work was exhibited in various exhibitions and competitions, but earning a living from his art seemed impossible. In 1993, some of his work was exhibited in America where it sold. The American Galleries were interested in his art.
Since that time all of his work has been sold exclusively in America. A bizarre situation formed around him...The Americans knew him as a Russian artist, the Russians thought of him as an American artist, Russian painters were convinced that Georgy was a sculptor, and Russian sculptors were certain that he was a painter. These odd perceptions suited Georgy, they left him free to do his own thing.
A search for Georgy Kurasov will produce a flood of paintings, but very little sculpture. Below is one of the few I found that I liked, apologies for the poor quality photo...
He paints in oils on canvas, typically his work will be about 40 x 30 inches. Here's Georgy with some of his work...
I love the vivid colour he uses, he's described as a cubist. His main subject matter is the human figure painted in his unique style.
Below, Birth of a Myth...
'Everything with a twist'...
I don't have titles for everything...here's some more.....
Below...'Yorick'.
I like his work very much. He may be an artist that devides opinion. I'll be interested in your take on Georgy Kurasov.

I can’t say I had heard of Kurasov. He has a luscious use of colour, and interesting sharp style of painting. I looked first, and thought hmm, then I looked again and thought maybe yes, interesting and certainly has something very different. The more you look the more you see in his work and there’s a lot to explore in his backgrounds.
I found a few more I quite like. The first is called Masquerade
The second is Tango Jazz
I also find a few different angles of one of his sculptures which is 28” high.

Don’t think I’ve seen his work before - sure I would have remembered as it’s very distinctive. I do like his paintings with their vibrant colours, but all the sharp angles are a bit hard on the eyes, couldn’t live with one of them. His sculpture above, though, is quite the opposite, with its soft outlines. Thanks for the informative intro. Lewis.

I also like the way he's dealt with the backgrounds.
