Iosif Derecichei was born in 1962 in a small city in the historic region of Transylvania in western Romania.  As a child, drawing came naturally to him and he later graduated with a Batchelor of Arts degree from the Ion Andreescu Art University.  His early work was often done en plein air in an impressionistic style but eventually evolved towards semi abstraction and abstract Impressionism.  His expressive, colourful paintings are mostly done in acrylic. After the regime change in Romania in 1989 it was possible for him to exhibit his work abroad and he started working with galleries in Hungary, as well as exhibiting in Western Europe, Japan and the US.  In 2004 he moved to Canada. Today his work reflects the place where he was born as well as impressions of his adopted country, Canada. I came across his work only recently and love his distinctive, colourful style.

Fabulous simplified shapes and exciting colour .  These are a joy. Thanks for the introduction.
Wow Jenny another great choice. I love the way he paints his trees and as Sylvia has said great use of colour. I only have an iPhone with me at the mo and can see these deserve to be seen bigger scale so will look further when home.
You certainly have chosen a really good artist Jenny , the paintings you ave selected are superb. Must have a good look at his stuff and select a few.  Found more than a few , his landscapes are really good, his boats are excellent.

I like these paintings on various levels. I particularly like the succession of colours on the wooden fence in the penultimate picture. The optical effect linking the trees and the slope of the hills behind in the last picture I find intriguing and a little jarring (something similar occurs in the 3rd pic). Its as if the artist is introducing some deliberate ambiguity in an op art vein, but I'm not sure whether it works when the rest of composition is coherent. That said, these are fascinating works, and thanks to Jenny for introducing them.
I was also taken with the fence Martin! Funny how little sections of a painting jump out at you.I do like his way of painting boats - especially the two kayaks.
His landscapes reminded me immediately of the Canadian Group of Seven and are equally as impressive. The boat paintings are splendid , the use of colour ( particularly in the sky) in the first one is really lovely. Great choice.  Paul, the initials for the Roy Lichtenstein section  are LH and refer to Lucian Hobodoc I seem to remember.
Lush colourful paintings, much to admire.   The last painting posted by Dixie above jarred a little.  The row of buildings in the background appear to be leaning to the left.  But this is a minor point with so many excellent examples of his work on show.
Thanks Andrew and well spotted .
Dixie's first post, boats on the beach.  Wow, who would have thought such a hotchpotch of bright colours would make a convincing sea-shore and sky?

That was me who suggested Lichtenstein. I'll present him on Wednesday. Thanks for remembering this, Paul. One small correction: his name is Roy, not Ray. No biggie, don't worry about it.
