I must confess I wasn't too impressed with the first three paintings, from then on they got better and better.
Not the self-portrait?  I thought that was one of the very best of them.

Fun fact: this painting, titled "Two girls", was bought at an auction in 2013 with 300,000 Euros, which made it the most expensive painting by a Romanian painter bought within the country. This record has been broken since then, but it's still in top 10 most expensive ones. Two other paintings of his have been sold for over 100,000 Euros. That's one reason why I chose to present this artist. Another reason is the fact that there's quite a bit of controversy about whether he deserves the posthumous fame he has. There are probably as many admirers of his works as there are detractors. Some critics claim that he was talented and deserved more recognition during his lifetime, while others claim that he is mediocre and that the value of his works is greatly exaggerated because of his tragic life story.
Thanks for the info and selection of paintings Lucian. He’s obviously an artist little known to most of us here in the UK, so interesting to see and hear about. Did he have a particular model for his female portraits? A few of them look to me like the same young lady.

Not much is known about his models. He was in love with a girl named Cecelia Vasilescu, who was also interested in painting and whom he briefly tutored, but his poor health combined with other life circumstances made it impossible for him to marry her, and they eventually drifted apart. It is possible that she was the subject of at least one of his paintings, but, to my knowledge, no photos of her have been found. The female subjects of his paintings remain shrouded in mystery.

Interesting thanks Lucian. I googled Cecilia Vasilescu and it brought up the painting of two girls above, or presumably the same person. I much prefer his female portraits also his flower paintings are pleasing.
The laundress stands out for me as being a little different, with great colour and contrasts to interest the eye. I was intrigued by the similarity between the dress and the wooden door and not too sure what was intended, which served to maintain interest too. Thanks Lucian for the introduction.
I can't really do any kind of introduction at the moment, because apart from the dates 1915 - 2000, I think, I know very little indeed about Wilfred Mark 2

So you're abandoning him? :(
I’ve searched the net several times Robert but can’t come up with much . As to abandoning him there is only so much time you want to spend searching him out, I’m sure his work will pop up unexpectedly at some point. Is he  abandon no not really more on the back boiler for now.
Could this be Robert’s elusive Wilfred Ball?  This second-hand book was originally published in 1994.

Jenny your perseverance and  tenacity is amazing....well done you.
Well done Jenny you should definitely have been a detective. Next weeks featuring artists are  Ray Balkwell and John McCombs I will open the thread as usual on Sunday evening.
Perhaps Robert should treat himself to the book for Christmas (assuming it’s the right Wilfred Ball) - it’s at a bargain price!
