I find a lot of his work to bright for my taste but acknowledge he is a fine artist . I do like his portraits which is unusual for me as I’m not a big portrait fan. I also like the boat one and the landscape .
Hard to believe that these later ones (that is. posted later) are by the same painter.  Some of those figures are very awkward... the last one has a rather unnerving zombie quality to it; whether intended or not.
They have just had a row......
That last one was apparently painted in 1977 while he was a student at The Royal College of Art.  As Robert says, it’s hard to believe it’s by the same person as his later work.  (Was a bit disappointed that Paul posted that one, although guess it can be interesting to see an artist’s very early work.)

Sorry Jenny ,  it is interesting to see the range of work done by the artists. I think offers hope to us mere mortals that we can also improve and not all artist painted such superb paintings from the beginning.
I think it’s really interesting to see the difference in his style early and now. The two early ones are very strange and I thought maybe they weren’t his. I wonder what the process was for him to change his style of painting so. I suppose many artists develop to a point where they start to sell and be successful and maybe he had other influences.

Paul, yes, it is interesting to see an artist’s very early work. Maybe it’s significant that that last painting was done during the time he was studying at the RCA - perhaps students didn’t have the opportunity or encouragement then to develop their own styles to any extent?

I knew a artist who had studied at RCA a long time back . He said it was really quite rigid what you had to study and what you produced,  it was also dependent on the tutors  and what they thought important, each one being quite different at times.  Not sure I would have done very well in those times, I’m sure some talented artists were stifled and some probably gave up .  From what I can gather it’s much different now with encouragement for been a bit different in how you work .
Interesting point. I went to Cardiff Art College for a year in the late 70s with ideas of doing portraiture and illustration. Neither was on the menu there at the time, or anything vaguely related. There was some interesting and helpful tuition but definitely not what I wanted.  Maybe as you say it’s different now. We see from the Sky Arts series in particular that they are always looking for that “something different “.
I rather like many of the works of Terence Clarke on display here. The colour and brush stroke choices I think work by encouraging the viewer to examine the painting more closely.  Talking of colour, have we had Howard Hodgkin yet?
No Martin we haven’t had Howard Hodgkin. I will add him to the list,   will you do the introduction it will  be five weeks or so before he is featured.
Sure, would love to.
